Alpha Chapter's SAI History

Sigma Alpha Iota was founded on June 12, 1903 at The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. The seven founders were both upperclass and graduate students: Elizabeth Campbell, Frances Caspari, Minnie Davis Sherrill, Leila Farlin Laughlin, Nora Crane Hunt, Georgina Potts, and Mary Storrs Andersen. All are deceased. The incorporation papers, under the laws of the State of Michigan, were signed on December 1, 1904, and recorded on December 15, 1904. Other chapters have since been added at colleges, universities, and conservatories across the country, and there are more than 90,000 initiated members. Our chapter is very special as the founding chapter, and our goal is to increase our membership dramatically before the Centennial Sigma Alpha Iota Convention in 2003, to be held in Ann Arbor.
