Lexus adds power and performance to its sedan lineup with the introduction of the V8-powered GS 400. This new model shares a completely redesigned exterior with its 6-cylinder GS 300 sibling, but features a chassis and suspension tuned for performance. As with all Lexus automobiles, the GS 400 puts a premium on comfort, while offering enthusiasts bolder styling and performance than the manufacturer's more conservative models. The GS 300 retains its 3.0-liter in-line-6-cyclinder engine, which has been improved to provide better performance.
The 1998 Lexus GS 4-door sedan is available in two trims: GS 300 and GS 400. Standard safety features include an anti-lock brake system (ABS), dual front and side airbags, and a Vehicle Skid Control (VSC) system. The GS 300 is driven by a 3.0-liter in-line 6-cylinder engine that produces 225 horsepower, while the new GS 400 gets a powerful 4.0-liter V8 that puts out 300 horsepower. Standard features for both trims include an automatic dual-zone climate control system, power windows and door locks, power tilt and telescopic steering wheel, a theft-deterrent system, walnut trim, and 10-way power front seats. The GS 400 upgrades with leather trim, a memory system for seating position, steering-wheel-mounted shift buttons, and 17-inch alloy wheels. Both trims also feature a Lexus/Pioneer 215-watt AM/FM stereo cassette with seven speakers.
