Plymouth Prowler is the second Chrysler concept car in recent history to make it from the car show circuit to dealerships with much of its original show-stopping flare still intact. (The first such Chrysler concept-to-showroom success was the Dodge Viper.) Prowler has the distinction of being the first and only factory-built hot rod. It also is the only hot rod ever to come with a warranty, a dealer service network, and dealer financing. While purists may scoff at the lack of a V8 engine and what they see as the end of the hot-rod ideal of uniqueness, the car eventually will be produced at a rate of 5,000 annually, a level many observers expect will result in a healthy aftermarket parts industry. Plymouth expects nearly all Prowler buyers to be males between 45 and 55. Plymouth skipped a model year with the Prowler, going directly to the 1999 model.
The 1999 Plymouth Prowler roadster is available as a single model. While it's designed with a nod to the past, safety equipment reflects the present and includes dual airbags, side-impact protection and 4-wheel disc brakes. Power comes from a new 3.5-liter 253-horsepower V6 engine teamed with a 4-speed AutoStick automatic transmission. Standard features include air conditioning; cruise control; power windows, door locks and mirrors; an AM/FM cassette with 6-disc CD changer; leather interior; and an anti-theft alarm system. Tires feature a low-tire-pressure sensor and run-flat capability, and are fitted on cast aluminum wheels that measure 17 inches in front, 20 inches in the rear. In addition to its signature color Prowler Purple, the 1999 model is also be available in Prowler Yellow.
