Cantonese Version (Dubbed) |
Episodes Released: | Hong Kong has shown the whole series, including the R movie. Also available in Malaysia. The videos go up to Stars (with R and S movie) and have none of the edits below though Michiru was translated differently and Makoto does not refer to her breasts in the Snow White episode. |
Violence: | None of it was edited. |
Lechery: | A small cut possibly made in episode 2. The "cute baby elephant" routine in episode 104 was cut. |
Nudity: | None of it was edited. |
Homosexuality: | None of it was edited. |
Time: | Pink Sugar Heart Attack was cut from episode 107. |
Names: | All names were simply translated. |
Theme: | Theme changed to a techno/dance type thing with infectious lyrics. ^_^ |
Other: | None of it was edited. |
Catalan Version (Dubbed)
Episodes Released: | Complete. |
Violence: | Unknown. |
Lechery: | Unknown. |
Nudity: | Unknown. |
Homosexuality: | Unknown. |
Time: | Unknown. |
Names: | Unknown. |
Theme: The original theme is used with translated lyrics. | ??? |
Other: | None of it was cut. |
English Version (Dubbed)
Episodes Released: | Showing Sailormoon SuperS (Go here to see which episodes were skipped.) in North America. Not sure of Australia nor New Zealand. Will do up to Stars. The movies are available on tape by Pioneer. The following does not apply to some versions of the tapes. |
Violence: | Characters are not even allowed to slap each other or hit the cats. 45-46 are combined into one episode where nobody dies. Usagi spanking Chibiusa is cut (though well deserved...) as well as Chibiusa wielding a toy gun. Some blood was edited. |
Lechery: | Any scenes of/comments about Rei's grandfather being a dirty old man are changed. |
Nudity: | Several scenes were changed or deleted. DiC made several cuts for "panty shots" when it was the leotard. Also, the Senshi were originally naked while transforming (with spots of color), but DiC erased the body lines and then accented the coloring. Some cheekage near the end of Jupiter's sequence was blotted. Sailormoon was not edited because she was already that way. Episode 119 was skipped because they could not paint clothes on the daimon in time for the first run but will later be shown. Episode 136 cut Rei walking in on Mamoru in a bath. Episode 151 cuts Ami's dream where her "normal" self (naked) talks to her "sailor" self. |
Homosexuality: | Zoisite and Fish Eye have been changed to women, so DiC had a little trouble altering some minor details, if they even bothered to try; Zoycite is incredibly flat-chested! ^^; Haruka and Michiru are apparently "cousins." The original wasn't explicit, but there were hints of a love relationship which were removed. The near-kiss between Unazuki and Mako-chan was shortened. ^^ |
Time: | Often cut for more commercial time. Further cuts for time in Australia and America. CGI (Computer Graphic Image) scene transitions (Sailormoon's tiara, Beryl's crystal, 3D box, or black crescent moon appear and the scene changes) were added. |
Names: | Most were renamed: (Usagi=Serena, other Usagi (Chibiusa)=Rini, Makoto=Lita, Yuuichiro=Chad, Naru=Molly, Umino=Melvin, Kunzite=Malachite, Dark Kingdom=NegaVerse, Cooan=Catsy, Beruche=Birdie, Haruka=Amara). Some resemble the original name: (Minako=Mina, Ami=Amy, Rei=Raye, Jadite=Jedite, Zoisite=Zoycite, Nephrite=Nephlyte, Ail=Alan, Esmaraude=Emerald, Safiru=Sapphire, Dimando=Diamond, Michiru=Michelle). Some were unchanged. Sailor MINI Moon? Eek! God forbid children have to face evil things such as a foreign language... |
Theme: | Similar beat to the original with a pop/rock twist that might have been nice were it not for those lyrics. ;_; |
Other: | The senshi being hung on crosses by Rubeus was cut as well as the shadow in Rei's anti-evil "ofuda", with a few exceptions. The Holy Grail is the "Purity Chalice" with any religious references cut or edited. Also, in the Show White episode, Lita says she has the most talent instead of saying she has the largest breasts. (I was left sort of wondering why she kept puffing out her cheast and pointing to them! ^^) Some car/bus scenes are sometimes flipped backwards so that they're on the "right" side. Lita explains her mother is allergic to cats as opposed to Mako-chan, whose parents are dead, saying she can't afford a pet. Michiru mentions that Adam and Eve were the first in the world to kiss. This was changed to her claiming her first kiss was with a boy named Brad. ~.~? |
Filipino/Tagalog Version (Dubbed)
Episodes Released: | Up to Sailormoon SuperS. Probably doing the whole series. Also, an episode was added to Sailormoon as well as one to Sailormoon R. They were basically "catch up" episodes where the voice actress of Sailormoon narrated some clips from previous episodes. |
Violence: | None of it was edited. |
Lechery: | None of it was edited. |
Nudity: | None of it was edited. |
Homosexuality: | None of it was edited. |
Time: | Apparantly, there are at least four commercials in every show. It seems that the only cuts made were for commercial time. |
Theme: | Theme was the original before a Filipino version with pretty sounding lyrics and the original music were made. |
Names: | Most names were kept in Japanese though Usagi was renamed "Bunny Tsukino" until the S season and the "Tsukikage no Knight" is renamed the "Knight of the Moonlight". |
Other: | None of it was cut. |
French Version (Dubbed)
Episodes Released: | All series in France. The French dub is offered in place of the English dub in Quebec for the large minority there. They released 9 episodes and stopped, then started again with the Ail/Ann episodes. |
Violence: | Very little of it was edited. |
Lechery: | Episode 2 has the scene with Umino looking up Miss Haruna's skirt cut. |
Nudity: | In episode 7, the monster attacking Mikan in the shower was partly cut. |
Homosexuality: | Zoisite and Kunzite are brothers. Sailor Uranus started out with a female voice actor, but later got a male one for her civilian form (Haruka). It was explained that she was disguised as a man to protect her identity and that Michiru was helping by pretending to be "his" girlfriend. |
Time: | Many cuts for time. Also, some episodes have been completely removed (Different ones than in the English version). |
Names: | Usagi=Bunny Rivière, Ami=Molly, Rei=Raya, Makoto=Marcy, Minako=Mathilda, Chibiusa=Camille, Haruka=Frédérique, Michiru=Mylène, Setsuna=Sylvania, and Hotaru=Olivia. |
Theme: | Theme song changed into a kindergarden march type song with amusing lyrics. (Only one I know of with male singers, though). |
Other: | None of it was cut. |
German Version (Dubbed)
Episodes Released: | Germany and Austria completed the entire series. The movies were aired though Ami's special was not. Additionaly, episode 69 and the SuperS specials were not aired in Austria. |
Violence: | Cuts were made in episodes 45-46, apparently on the ZDF version only, not on RTL2. |
Lechery: | None of it was edited. |
Nudity: | None of it was edited. |
Homosexuality: | Zoisite was changed to a woman. Few changes for Haruka and Michiru. Fish Eye was *not* changed to female, but his lines were down-played quite a bit. Kind of odd, in my opinion, since Zoisite was more masculine than Fish Eye. ^^ |
Time: | None of it was cut. |
Theme: | Theme changed to a catchy techno/dance beat, but the lyrics are a bit...lacking. I mean, seriously, how many times can you say "Sailormoon" in one song? |
Names: | Usagi=Bunny Tsukino. Most of the other names stayed Japanese. |
Other: | None of it was cut. |
Greek Version (Dubbed)
Episodes Released: | Will do the entire series. The movies were not done. |
Violence: | None of it was edited. |
Lechery: | None of it was edited. |
Nudity: | None of it was edited. |
Homosexuality: | None of it was edited. |
Time: | None of it was cut. |
Names: | Usagi=Bunny. Most of the other names stayed Japanese. |
Theme: | Theme is the same all the way through and though I haven't aquired it yet, I once read a comment by that guy who used to make music videos of the sailormoon songs telling the guy who sent him the theme not to be TOO embarassed. I guess it was pretty bad. |
Other: | None of it was cut. |
Indonesian Version (Dubbed)
Episodes Released: | At least to Sailormoon S. This was five years ago though. ^^; |
Violence: | None of it was edited. |
Lechery: | None of it was edited. |
Nudity: | None of it was edited. |
Homosexuality: | None of it was edited. |
Time: | None of it was cut. |
Names: | The names stayed Japanese. |
Theme: | Theme has a fast-paced dance beat that I was quite pleasantly surprised with. The lyrics...were something else. ^^ They are similar to the Japanese at first but quickly deviate and the grand finale throws up thanks for the powers to Allah. |
Other: | They also got the cats' genders wrong. This seems to be a bad mistake going around. ^^ |
Italian Version (Dubbed)
Episodes Released: | The entire series (minus episode 89) done. The movies and specials were aired, though out of order. |
Violence: | Some scenes with blood cut from Sailorstars. |
Lechery: | Toned down. |
Nudity: | A few seconds were cut from episode 151 (Ami nude). Episode 200 was heavily modified. (Usagi ONLY flew around naked for half the episode! ^^;) |
Homosexuality: | Haruka and Michiru were "just friends". Zoisite and Fish Eye were made women. (Fish Eye's bare chest scene was cut, of course.) The Starlights were explained by saying that they're replaced by identical twin sisters during transformation. (That has got to be the single most stupid thing I've ever heard.) Their transformation phrases were also rewritten after a psychologist named Vera Slepoy said that Sailormoon made little boys become gay. ~.~ (I stand corrected...) |
Time: | The beginning of several episodes near the end of the first series and the beginning of 56 & 57 had cuts. |
Names: | The four generals have new names. Alan and Ann have different school names. Usagi=Bunny, Ami=Emi, Rei=Rea, Makoto=Morea, and Minako=Marta, and Cooan was renamed Kermesite. |
Theme: | Theme changed to a nifty techno almost-ballad beat with nice sounding, if a bit "youthful", lyrics. I've been told the Italian has a strong Japanese accent . |
Other: | None of it was cut. |
Korean Version (Dubbed)
Episodes Released: | South Korea aired every season, though the first arc of SuperS was skipped. |
Violence: | Likely but not certain that cuts were made. |
Lechery: | Likely but not certain that cuts were made. |
Nudity: | Transformations were partially cut. |
Homosexuality: | The first arc of SuperS was deleted, possibly because of Fish Eye though I don't see why they wouldn't just make him female if he was a problem. I'm not yet sure of what happened to Zoisite or if there were any modifications done to Terry (Haruka) and Monica's (Michiru's) relationship. |
Time: | No cuts for time...In fact, all commercials were removed from the program entirely! |
Names: | Usagi=Sarah, Ami=Yu-ri, Rei=Viki, Makoto=Lita, Minako=Mina, Michiru=Monica, Haruka=Terry, Setsuna=Isabelle, Hotaru=Coco, Chibiusa=Koma Sarah, Naru=Hannah, Umino=Danny. |
Theme: | I'm not certain about the theme though it's probable that the original is used. |
Other: | Likely but not certain that cuts were made. |
Malay Version (Dubbed)
Episodes Released: | Apparently Malaysia got to somewhere in the S series. |
Violence: | None of it was edited. |
Lechery: | None of it was edited. |
Nudity: | None of it was edited. |
Homosexuality: | None of it was edited. |
Time: | Few cuts (if any) were made. |
Names: | Most names remain the same. |
Theme: | Original openings with slight visual modifications. |
Other: | The Malaysian dub is only available through satellite. The videos are in heavily accented English. |
Mandarin Version (Dubbed)
Episodes Released: | Singapore has finished, but Taiwan only made it up to the S series. Apparently only up to Sailormoon R in China. |
Violence: | No known cuts. |
Lechery: | No known cuts. Umino still stares up Haruna's skirt. |
Nudity: | Transformation scenes have been cut. |
Homosexuality: | Zoisite is still a guy. |
Time: | None of it was cut. |
Names: | Most names are different, even changing mid-show! In Taiwan (and possibly the other two), the "sailor" was replaced with "fairy". (ie - "Sailornetpune" becomes "Neptune Fairy") |
Theme: | Theme changed according to Ken Aromdee though I haven't verified for myself yet. |
Other: | None of it was cut. |
Polish Version (Overdubbed*)
Episodes Released: | Completed (45, 46, and possibly 132 were skipped). |
Violence: | There weren't any notable cuts made. |
Lechery: | Rei's Grandpappy was smoothed out a little, but still basically a pervert... ;) |
Nudity: | Again, no notable cuts were made. |
Homosexuality: | They changed Zoisite's last words from "I loved you..." (to Kunzite) to "I loved you like a brother..." but it's a thin veil. |
Time: | There were the "commercial in/out" scenes, but it always skipped over commercials. |
Names: | Names are not changed. |
Theme: | I'm not sure, but, due to the fact that it's an overdub, probably the original. |
Other: | No other notable cuts were made. |
Portugese Version - Brazil (Dubbed)
Episodes Released: | Up to Sailormoon R. |
Violence: | None of it was edited. |
Lechery: | None of it was edited. |
Nudity: | None of it was edited. |
Homosexuality: | Zoisite is never said to be male or female, and the voice is very odd, but because the Brazil version is a re-dub of the Latin American version, which is a re-dub of the English dub of the original Japanese version, (Whew!) Zoisite's probably female. |
Time: | None of it was cut. |
Names: | Mostly DiC names are used. Non-DiC names include Nicholas for Yuuichiro, Lua for Luna, Malashite for Kunzite, and they aren't called " Sailor Senshi" or "Sailor Scouts", just "Sailors". |
Theme: | Theme changed to a cute pop-like tune with lyrics translated from Spanish. The last few bars sound, interestingly enough, like the Indonesian one. |
Other: | Unlike the other versions, Luna and Artemis are not portrayed as "adults". (This is going to get interesting when Diana comes into the picture, heh heh ^_~) |
Portugese Version - Portugal (Dubbed)
Episodes Released: | Up to Sailormoon SuperS. Episode 89 was skipped. |
Violence: | None of it was edited. |
Lechery: | None of it was edited. |
Nudity: | None of it was edited. |
Homosexuality: | Zoisite, Haruka, and Michiru are not changed. |
Time: | None of it was cut. |
Names: | Usagi=Bunny Tsukino, Ami=Amy Mizuno, Rei=Rita Hino (silent 'h'), Makoto=Maria, Minako=Joana Lima, Mamoru=Gonçalo Chiba, Chibiusa=Shibi Uza, Michiru=Mariana Kaiou, Setsuna=Susana Melo, Hotaru=Otavia Tomoe, Naru=Sara Tavares, and Umino=Jimmy. Luna is unchanged. Some other minor names changed, some stayed the same. |
Theme: | Theme is very childlike but strangely catching. It uses a unique beat, music, and lyrics. |
Other: | They got the two cats' genders wrong. (Talk about your screwups...^^;;) |
Romanian Version (Overdubbed*)
Episodes Released: | All 200 episodes though not specials nor the movies except R. |
Violence: | None of it was edited. |
Lechery: | None of it was edited. |
Nudity: | Still intact. |
Homosexuality: | Zoisite changed gender midshow but Haruka & Michiru were unchanged. |
Time: | No cuts for time as there were no commercials. (Bad time slot.) |
Names: | Uses the original names. |
Theme: | Uses the original. |
Other: | The show was basically a naration of the original but this, unfortunately, resulted in the loss of a lot of the dialogue. |
Russian Version (Overdubbed)
Episodes Released: | Up to Sailormoon SuperS. |
Violence: | None of it was edited. |
Lechery: | None of it was edited. |
Nudity: | None of it was edited. |
Homosexuality: | None of it was edited. |
Time: | None of it was cut. |
Names: | Most names are unchanged though Usagi=Bunny. |
Theme: | Theme uses original music with no lyrics until S when they use the original lyrics as well. |
Other: | None of it was cut. |
Spanish Version - Latin America (Dubbed)
Episodes Released: | All episodes in Argentina, Chile, México, Perú. To S in Colombia. To SuperS in Panamá. Somewhere in R in Uruguay & Costa Rica (possibly all on cable). Somewhere in S in Guatemala & Venezuela. |
Violence: | None of it was edited. |
Lechery: | None of it was edited. |
Nudity: | None of it was edited. |
Homosexuality: | Zoisite is made a woman (though she had a male voice for the first few episodes that she appeared in). This was apparently because they were working from the US version, not due to censorship per se, and no changes have been made to Haruka and Michiru. Also Fish-Eye is male, though the VA is actually a woman. (This is actually done quite a lot in Japan...take the Starlights for example. Okay, bad example. ^^ Bart Simpson has a female voice actor.) |
Time: | Each station receives the episodes uncut for commercial time, but sometimes cuts them locally. |
Names: | Mostly uses the same names as the DiC version, including Serena, Lita, Malachite, and NegaVerse. "Metallia" is kept. One episode was actually from the European version and used the names Bunny and Dark Kingdom. Sailorpluto is supposedly called 'Sailor Plut' because Disney has rights to the name 'Pluto' (Mickey's dog) in North America and, therefore, it's a no-no. |
Theme: | First theme uses the original music with an almost perfect translation of the original lyrics. Second theme seems to be a cross of the original Japanese and the American. The lyrics are only changed around slightly to fit the beat. The S season uses the R opening at the start and the original S opening later. Sailorstars uses a mix of the first two Japanese openings. (This one's cool! ^_^) |
Other: | The episode before Venus appeared was apparently taken from the European Spanish version, causing a breif goof of names. |
Spanish Version - Spain (Dubbed)
Episodes Released: | Complete. |
Violence: | None of it was edited. |
Lechery: | None of it was edited. |
Nudity: | None of it was edited. |
Homosexuality: | Zoisite is made Kunzite's nephew. Haruka and Michiru are not changed. ^_^ |
Time: | None of it was edited. |
Names: | Usagi=Bunny Tsukino, Ami=Amy Mizuno, Rei=Ray Hino, Makoto=Patrícia Kino, Minako=Carola Aino, Haruka=Timmy Tenó, Michiru=Vicky Kaió, Setsuna=Raquél Meó, Hotaru=Andrea Tomoe, Mamoru=Armando Chiba, Umino=Camilo, Naru=Kari, Motoki=Mauricio, Yuuichirou=Fernando, and Tuxedo Mask=Señor del Antifaz. |
Theme: The original theme is used with translated lyrics that are vaguely similar. There's also a really cheesy voiceover: "Sailormoon!" | ??? |
Other: | None of it was cut. |
Swedish Version (Dubbed)
Episodes Released: | Up to the Black Moon arc of Sailormoon R. Episodes 15 & 18 (previously skipped) are shown though 4 no longer is due to complains about it's weight loss theme. Episodes 49 & 54 were also skipped. |
Violence: | None of it was edited; however, the show was halted for two years due to complaints. |
Lechery: | Rei's grandfather is still a dirty old man. ;) |
Nudity: | None of it was edited. |
Homosexuality: | Zoisite changed to a woman. Allegedly because the station can't show gays who are evil, rather than because they can't show them at all. |
Time: | None of it was cut. |
Names: | Beryl=Morga, Kunzite=Lord Kunta, Tuxedo Mask=Maskerade Rosen (Masked Rose), Usagi=Annie, Minako=Arian, Naru=Lima, Yuuichirou=Yushi. Others remain unchanged. |
Theme: | Theme uses the original music with new lyrics though 27 uses the original opening. |
Other: | Metallia had a male voice actor (same guy as Jadeite & Kunzite) in a few episodes. Just a silly mistake, though not as bad as those who mixed up the cats' genders. ^^ |
Thai Version (Dubbed?)
Episodes Released: | Up to Sailormoon Sailorstars. Sailorstars is available in Japanese. |
Violence: | ??? |
Lechery: | ??? |
Nudity: | ??? |
Homosexuality: | Haruka is not changed. The rest is unknown. |
Time: | ??? |
Names: | ??? |
Theme: | Uses the same beat as original, but with altered lyrics and strangly contagious music that reminds me of those Italians restaurants where they play accordians. ^^;; |
Other: | None of it was cut. |
Turkish Version (Dubbed?)
Episodes Released: | At least up to Sailormoon R. |
Violence: | ??? |
Lechery: | ??? |
Nudity: | ??? |
Homosexuality: | ??? |
Time: | ??? |
Names: | ??? |
Theme: | ??? |
Other: | ??? | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
* = The original soundtrack is sometimes still audible (not deleted), like when foreign people are on the news. Often there are no voice actors, but a narrator or two sometimes making a half-hearted attempt at "acting". ^^;;
I wrote a part of this HTML from the SailorMoon FAQ written by Ken Arromdee.
The rest I gathered from various sites or contacts.
