Robert Coulter


Robert Coulter is an active free-lance performer in the Louisville area. He recieved his diploma from the prestigeous Youth Performing Arts School, and continued his studies at the University of Louisville. He performs, or has performed with virtually every Louisville area ensemble as principal tubist. He has premiered many works, including a performance at the 1995 International Brassfest in Bloomington, Indiana. 

His primary teacher has been Mr John Jones of the University of Louisville. He has also had lessons with Mr Neal Tidwell of Duquense University and The River Cities Brass Band, and Mr Eugene Pokorny, principal tuba of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He currently performs as principal tuba with the: Southern Baptist Seminary Orchestra and Faculty Brass Quintet, Derby City Tuba Quartet, The Advocate Brass Band, The Rascals of Ragtyme, and many other local groups. For 12 years he was also Solo BBb tuba with The Commonwealth Brass Band. Robert is also a founding member and driving force behind the Derby City Brass Band.

He has also performed with such artists and conductors as: Marilyn Mims, Karel Husa, Robert Franz, Lawrence Leighton Smith, Robert Bernhard, and Acton Ostling. He plays on 1968 Meinl-Weston Bill Bell model CC tuba with 5 rotary valves, and a detachable bell. He uses a Bach 12M mouthpiece for most work, and a Mirafone C4 or Wick 4L for lighter works. He also plays as is needed an 1970 Besson euphonium with a Bach 1 1/2G mouthpiece.
