Who Am I? Jackie Chan could have been a superstar in the US; he's certainly got the energy and the charisma. Unfortunately, he is hampered by two things that prevented him from being the next big thing. One: his English. Simply put, his accent is just too thick to be accepted by American audience. Two: his choice of films that is released in the States. He always choose the bad ones. Let's face it, Rumble in the Bronx is an awful movie. There are nice stunts, but the movie itself doesn't possess a coherent plot. Couple that with a bad English soundtrack, the end result is just atrocious. Same criticism applies to Mr. Nice Guy and some others that were released for the US market. Jackie Chan under-estimate the American audience. He thinks the Yanks only appreciate slap stick stuff and doesn't mind the lack of a plot. Well, he's wrong. He has done better work (Operation Condor and Police Story), and those should have been released first. But I digress. Who Am I should have been released in the theatres; rather, it is relegated to the fate of a straight to video release. It's a shame, because this movie has winner written all over it. It is much, much better than some of the stuff that were released in the theatre.Jackie Chan should slap himself silly for releasing Mr. Nice Guy rather than this one. Jackie plays a CIA operative, who along with an elite team of commando, went deep into African to execute a secret mission. Alas, they were betrayed by their superiors, and Jackie became the sole survivor of his team. Unfortunately, he bumped his head hard and cannot remember who he was. His mission: to discover his true identity, uncover the conspiracy and kick the bad guy's ass. Can Jackie pull it off? Can Captain James Tiberius Kirk fire a photon torpedo? Several things are successfully blended together to make this movie work. Pace, execution, and of course, the fighting and stunts. Oh yes, the bodacious babes, too. There are TWO of them!! Put all these elements together, and what you've got is energy, intensity, and fun. When an action flick has all of these three qualities, you've got one cool flick on your hands. As it was in the past, Jackie's ride is a Mistubishi (Lancer Evolution VII this time around), and the car chasing scene is comparable to Ronin, which is to say it's very, very good. The fighting, as usual, are awesome. I always enjoyed watching Jackie scaling walls and jumping off buildings. There is no shortage of that kind of stuff here. Conclusion: Jackie at his best. Even though the premise is a cliche, I still enjoyed the film's execution, pace, and energy. Get it. Score: 85/100 |
