A Y2K UPDATE: Closing In On 01/01/00

Well, here he is, Dr. (aaaah hhheemmmm) Gary North. He looks too much like me for my comfort. To think that by calling myself a Christian, I might ever have been considered by anyone to be in his camp!! Christian Reconstructionism, is a temptation to allow bigotry and ignorance to swamp one's God given rationality. It is nothing new for the previously disillusioned to follow yet another false prophet into another abyss. Few people who take this guy seriously have any idea of his track record regarding future predictions. It's precisely a whopping 0%.

In a speech made just before the infamous Rodney King verdict, Former Senator Bill Bradley, currently running as a "traditional" Democrat against the neo-Jimmy Walkeresque clique of Hill and Billary Clinton, that has claimed the White House for the last two terms, decried all the fear in our cities, the violence, the grip of American materialism on American kids through television, etc. etc. Comparisons with what Gary North and his supporters claim about the death throes of a decadent culture that they both hate and want to replace seem incredibly similar. Of course their solutions are quite dissimilar, or are they?

Y2K? So what exactly is going to happen? Nobody knows. But we have already gone through a few windows which should have made some impact on us and didn't. The first one I looked for was after April 1, 1999. Some had predicted disruptions due to Y2K in Japan and in New York. Nothing! Then I looked for a disruption caused by the failed GPS system in August, 1999. Nothing! Then September 9, 1999 passed without incident. Nothing, nothing and nothing! Looks to me as though Gary North's perfect record will be sustained.

What of all those people out there who went into survival mode? You know what? There was nothing so terribly wrong with that even if there were no Y2K threat, real or imagined. It's actually a rather American response to life; be independent or a rugged individualist, do for yourself and yours. Some of the redoubts people have built for themselves are no doubt rather impressive by this time. Aside from this, the survivalist boom has had a salient impact on communities around the country. It has broken up complacency, gotten people to interact more, brought common concerns to the surface in many communities, especially the rural small towns.

If there's no serious impact from Y2K, it would be well not to abandon this survivalist posture and just go back to the way the world was before, especially since so many people from all walks of life are really getting more than a little tired of the quality of our present culture. It may be high time for us to go our own way and build something better for ourselves and our children on our own terms, a culture that gets back to the core fundamentals of beauty, compassion, community, quality and the opposites of the deadly sins.

However if there's no realized dire effects from Y2K as described and predicted by Gary North, then it behooves all of us NOT TO PAY ANY FURTHER ATTENTION TO ANYTHING MORE HE SAYS!

UPDATE: It is now Thursday, February 17, 2000. Y2K was a bomb, nothing happened! At this point Gary North has earned that lofty status reserved for the ten or so biggest assholes I have ever known of. This is a man with a mean little outlook he was hoping to hoodwink as many people as possible into accepting, a geeky little man with some messianic dementia regarding his own personal status as one of God's future henchmen, a bad man with a bunch of evil ideas. What a damn fool! And he had tens of thousands of people following him and most unaware of his ideas. There are rumors of a lawsuit planned to pin a few Federal charges against Dr. (yeah right!) North. It would serve him right to have to serve some time in jail, but on second thought he'd just manipulate the situation into a martyrdom for himself. They always do that. No, far better if he is finally and completely ignored by eveyone!
