Special Exhibition:
Music in Painting from 1500 until 1700
April 4 - July 1, 2001
at Palais Harrach, Second Floor Gallery, 
A-1010 Vienna, Freyung 3

The exhibition will show more than 100 historical paintings and graphics of flute-playing shepherds, still-life scenes with musical instruments, musical allegories, and portraits of famous musicians. Highlights of the exhibition include paintings by Tiziano ("The nymph and the shepherds"), Bernardo Strozzi ("The gamba player," "Portrait of Claudio Monteverdi"), self-portraits of Jacob Jordaen and Jan Steen, and oeuvres by Ribera, Poussin, and Dosso Dossi. Also on show are a great number of historical music instruments, musical scores, and autographs.
