I'm a list freak, so much so that I basically need a list of my lists to keep track of what I'm keeping track of. The point? Oh yeah. I was going through my scanning record list again and noticed how many sites looked good but lacked a link back to GeoCities. Now, with the watermark getting ready to attach itself to every page and frame in GeoCities, it turns out the people who ignored the links will be saved from the work of linking back to GC. However, many people did not ignore my plea to encode upon their pages a link back to GeoCities, and some have even become good cyberfriends because of it. One such new friend is lspeeth, who is the webmaster for the last page I sponsored for featured page status, Vienna/Strasse/7074/, a nice page about a real-live conductor. This site is a one of the cleanest, most straighforward sites in my block. And I helped to bring it into featured page world, rescuing it from imminent illegal commercialism. It's always a little unnerving--at least for me, since I don't like confrontations, even on the Internet--writing to someone to tell them they're doing something wrong. With a couple of flinches, I opened lspeeth's reply to the warning and was pleasantly surprised to find she was more than ready to comply with the rules. She took out all the commercial references and added links back to GeoCities, and now the site stands as one of the outstanding ones in Vienna. I understand little bits of some languages, mostly the Romance languages, French, Italian, Spanish, and some German. At least I can tell if a page is offering a price list or links to illegal sites. Some pages look very good, but I can only guess as to how good they really are because of my monolinguisticness. New word. One of the best Italian pages I've seen is Vienna/Strasse/7013/ . The layout is nice, it loads fast because it's not loaded with graphics, but it's in Italian, so I don't have much of a clue what it's about, except that it is obviously musical. It didn't have a link back to GeoCities, either, so I wrote and told Simone. Soon afterward I received an email declaring that the missing links were an oversight and they would be installed posthaste. And they were, too. Gigantic ones. Simone's really gonna love watermarks. And finally, a lot of pages are not really themed for Vienna at all, the person just liked the neighborhood. And who can blame someone for that? I normally write and tell the person the facts and try to recommend a more suitable address, but most of them don't want to move. Some of those pages are fun to go through, and one of the most fun pages of that sort belongs to Tree Tree at Vienna/Strasse/7063/. What makes this page fun? How about ways to say "I love you" in a few dozen languages? Or maybe a personality test based on what kind of animals you like? She's got some good music, too, and some wild animated graphics, so it's worth the visit. And, thanks to my efficient scanning and recommendations for graphics sites, she has some of the best-looking graphic links back to GeoCities you ever saw. Another benefit to me, if the watermark survives, is that I will no longer have to maintain my list of sites that need a link back to GeoCities.
