Keep in mind this is my personal top 50. I am in no way saying that these games are better than your personal favorites and you are welcome to make your own list. I love every game in this list especially the games in my top 25
1: Mario Rpg series (Paper Mario, Super Mario RPG, Mario and Luigi SSS)Favorite: Paper Mario
Paper Mario is everything I look for in a game. Humor, great gameplay, and an imaginative style. The same goes for the 2 other Mario rpgs. The Mario rpgs are so great because the developers made the game with Mario in mind, rather than just slapping Mario in and hoping that people will buy it. I love them all almost equally but if I had to decide between the 3, I would choose Paper Mario.
2: Earthbound
Earthbound is quite possibly the perfect game. It's extremely original, is fun to play, and stays with you after you have finished it. Few games have made me laugh, think, and explore as much as I do when playing Earthbound. The story is quite possibly the best story in a video game and is filled with dozens of loveable characters. From Mr. Saturn, Belch, and the Happy Happyists, hardly anyone feels like some generic character. The ending is also one of the very best in gaming and really makes you feel like you accomplished something. For that, Earthbound is my 2nd favorite game of all time.
3: Legend of Zelda series. Favorite: Majora's Mask
The Legend of Zelda series is highly respected, and for a good reason too. All of the games in the series (except the CD-I games) are well crafted exciting adventure games. From the original Legend of Zelda to the Wind Waker, each one gives you a thrill of discovery when you are exploring the numerous dungeons. Majora's Mask is my personal favorite because of the unique mask items that transform Link into different races and the darker storyline. Wind waker is a close second.
4: Fire Emblem
Fire Emblem is an addictive strategy rpg. I have beaten the game 4 times and I still wouldn't mind going through it again. The thing that makes it so great is that it has everything that makes strategy rpgs fun, but it simplifies it so you aren't always shuffling through menus (ex: Final Fantasy Tactics Advance). The multiple routes through the game also give you a reason to play it again.
5:Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy X is the best PS2 game and, in my opinion, the best Final Fantasy game to date. The amount of work put into the game is impressive. The graphics are outstanding, the voice overs are great, and the story is one that is worth being told. Finally the world map was removed from the series and a faster battle system which helps the game from stumbling in areas previous games in the series have before.
6: Animal Crossing
Animal Crossing is a change from the ordinary. Instead of trying to save the world or gun down terrorists, the point of the game is to live your life the way you want to. Want to get the biggest house with the rarest furniture? You can do that. Want to just relax and talk with the villagers? Then you can do that too. It's a nice change of pace to just be able to talk to the charming animals and collect furniture. For that, Animal Crossing is one my all time favorites.
7: Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid mixes the best of the film world and the game world to make one of my favorite games. The production values are amazing especially when everyone else at the time was just copying the latest big sellers on the PS1 and N64. Metal Gear Solid stands the test of time amazingly well and still is as impressive in today's HD era.
8: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
"OBJECTION! Explain to the court why this game deserves such a high spot!"
Phoenix Wright is a very innovative adventure game. The genre has been nearly extinct and declining in quality since lucasarts stopped making them for the PC but Phoenix just won't let the genre be falsley accused. At first glance a lawyer game doesn't looks like as much fun as the bar exam. Thankfully the game doesn't follow the strict rules of court and instead creates its own rules for the sake of fun. The judge is not impartial, prosecutors are the only ones that get witnesses, and trials only last 3 days. The writing is translated perfectly and can pull off amazing feats. The game can be funny or serious when it wants to be and it never feels melodramatic.
9: Yoshi's Island
Yoshi's Island is my favorite of the famous Mario platformer games and Mario isn't even the main character! Yoshi does a remarkable job as the protaganist and brings new gameplay styles to the genre. Instead of just jumping on the enemies, now you are encouraged to eat them and hurl them as your weapons. Yoshi's other unique abilities come into play also, such as his flutter jump and transforming powers. The story-book graphics also create a charming atmosphere for the game.
10: Kirby Super Star
Kirby Super Star isn't just one game but instead is a collection of 8 games in 1. The controls are perfect, the music is cheerful, and the graphics are timeless which all adds up to make this the best kirby game. The best part of Super Star is how each of the games in it are unique and play differently, plus they have a lot of replay value to boot! The drop in and drop out co-op only adds to total package.
