FAQs 4. In the clutter of todays overloaded emails, should I include a word such as "mkt304" in the subject of my email for it to get your attention?
Yes! This would help. Emails with no subject or unclear subject are not opened for security reasons.
FAQs 5. Members of my team do not seem to want to participate in the group assignments. What are we supposed to do?
I RECOMMEND:
1. Write what you would like them to achieve.
Provide a SHORT and PRECISE objective with a TIME (deadline), and include the NOTE that if this was not to work you would be SORRY to let them go do the WHOLE assignment outside of the team.
2. Give them this statement and ask them if they agree to it.
3. Write an email to confirm the above and ccmail it to the other members and to the Professor.
4. If they do not comply.
a) give them another chance/task using the same above method,
or, 2) remove the individual(s) from your team.
5. Remove the individual(s)
Write a letter/email stating the methods and steps as above and confirming they failed them and that is why the majority of the group members have decided to let them go (i.e., fire him/her/them).
This process is exercising your leadership skills.
FAQs 6. “My group and I are concern about this class. We cannot understand what you mean by writing a marketing plan. What is a marketing plan? What should we write about?”
Do not send me emails containing questions which cannot be answered in an email. It really takes a Semester to answer this question.
FAQs 7. “Slides that you can download from the class website are not the same as the one presented in class. I want them all!"
These dowloadable slides should help you to (1) take notes in class, and (2) to review before the mini quizz. They are ONLY a summary of the information presented in both the class and the textbook. To get to see all the slides you will have to come to class.
FAQs 8. “I had our revised E. letter reviewed by the TA. He specifically indicated that he does not want to see a reference made to a focus group research that tries to extrapolate some number regarding the product. Yet, I was under the impression that you want us to find (at least) qualitative data regarding the validity of the two given opportunities. Could you please clarify."
If ALL attempts have failed to identify good secondary data you will need to research primary data to construct your opportunity section. I insist on the attempt to find secondary data first. Opportunities are not issued only from primary data.
Therefore, if you will be collecting primary data I suggest you use an exploratory method such as a focus group. Hence, results from a focus group can be used as opportunities.
Just know that these results would have to be further confirmed in a quantitative primary data collection method to enhance its reliability value if you had more time. This semester, quantitative methods would be too lengthy and consequently qualitative methods are considered acceptable/sufficient for the purpose of this course/assignment.
FAQs 9. “I would like to ask you about the use of secondary data in our opportunities section. I remember in class you mentioned that for the group engagement letter it is possible to find statistics for the majority of points in the opportunities section, and later during the writing of the marketing plan add the rest of the supporting sources. So far, we have found the secondary data for 3 out of 5 opportunities. Is it OK or not?
"
Normally, it would not be OK, that is that you should have supporting data/sources for all your suggestions. It depends on the overall paper and the type of opportunities you are suggesting. There is not a single rule that applies to this, it is mostly a proposal at this stage.
FAQs 10. "How do I prepare myself for a quiz?"
In this order. Read chapters twice at least, make memo cards, read your notes and polish your memo cards, review the summary SUMMARY summary SUMMARY summary slides and ensure you understand and know well all the concepts that are SUMMARIZED in these slides. Finally, you could go on the Internet and search for some testing materials to train you for the mini quiz.
FAQs 11. "The slices that you posted online were different from the one in class. I am wondering if you can send those slices to me. Those slices are very good for studying."
Only summary slides are available for download. Textbook is covering everything that is in my slides, unless I mention it during the lecture.
FAQs 12. "Can I use 'Wikipedia' database as well as other reference sites for my information, because I had found great articles regarding some segments of our project, but my team members are afraid it is not a useable reference."
Wikipedia is open source so it is not a reliable reference. Usually they provide references that (1) can be checked, and (2) then used if deemed reliable.
FAQs 13. "I am xx.9% from a better grade. I am ready to do anything to make it better. What can I do?"
Every points count when a student is xx.9%. So I review every student grades with this in mind. I use a set of fair rules to determine if I could eventually move a student's grade to the next level up.
1. Are the results for the 2 best quizzes in class higher or lower than the overall percentage? BR>
2. Did the student get ALL the jingle points?
3. Did the student receive the "1%" extra for being noticed in the class discussions?
The first rule is the most determinant because it reflects your personal performance more than any other grades you received in the class.
