FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. What is the difference between musicality and musicianship in the criteria for judging?
ØMusicality is the quality or state of being musical or melodiousness. On the other hand, musicianship refers to the artistry and insight displayed in the interpretation or rendition of music.
2. When will the contest piece be announced?
ØThe contest piece will be announced and the actual score will be given only to the school finalists at the conductor’s meeting which usually takes place a week after the elimination rounds.
3. Will the contest piece be the same for different kind of choruses?
ØYes, only one song will be arranged as the competition’s contest piece. However the organizing committee will commission two versions of the arrangement – one for mixed voice (SATB/SAB) and another for equal voice (SSA/SSAA or TTB/TTBB).
4. When will the 15-minute/10-minute performance time start and end?
ØTimers will start as the first member of the choir enters the stage and will end as the last chorister exits.
5. How will the order of performance be determined?
ØThis will be determined as the conductors or choir representatives have their drawing of lots before the competition during their 5-minute sound check.
6. Will there be again, just like last year, batches for the elimination round?
ØBatches depend on the number of participating schools this year. Should the number of schools exceed 16, choir schedule for the elimination round will be identified by a documented drawing of lots by the organizing committee. Participants will be notified as soon as this issue came up.
7. Is there a specific order of songs to be observed?
ØNone. It is up to the choir to decide about their song repertoires to come up with a suitable program.
8. Can the choir change or edit their chosen repertoires that have already been submitted to the organizing committee?
ØYes. Should the choir wish to replace or edit their chosen pieces, this must be done at least a week before the competition. They must also submit three (3) clear copies of the new score. All submitted pieces automatically become property of the CMLI JCAA. After the elimination round, choir finalists are not anymore permitted to change or edit their chosen repertoires.
9. How many points will be deducted for every minute gone past the performance time?
ØThree (3) points will be deducted at the elimination rounds and five (5) points at the final round. The said number of points will be subtracted from the total score given by every judge.
10. In what category do religious or praise songs fall?
ØThese sings are usually released commercially through various forms of mass media and promoted by popular praise music artists; so, these are considered as OPM. However, certain arrangements make praise songs in the Philippine Air category.
11. Can the choir use previous contest piece titles as their chosen piece?
ØYes, as long as it is arranged by other music personalities. Usage of former Voices in Harmony contest piece titles with the same arranger is prohibited.
