"Cryptic"
1997
After departure of Dan Swano, Edge of Sanity lost its melodiousness which usually had been
realised by twin guitars interwoven with nice background sound. The great struggle between
Andreas Axelsson and Dan Swano, those two titans who had been
determining all structure of preceding albums, has finished. The split off made by Dan is characterized by the fact that
discord with musical direction achieved its peak during last record "Infernal".
So far as music is concerned it becomes more deadly with harsh vocals by
Robert Karlsson from Pan-Thy-Monium. All is sounding in area of pure Death Metal
style. In comparison with records made in 1994-1996y., now music of Edge of Sanity
brings back its power which had been lost before. A good arrangement with raw brutal sound make this album enjoyable.
Dan Swano had sung on "Infernal" before his departure :
...Between midnight and twilight
I leave my shell
To enter the dream-light
The final farewell...
And without that dream-light "Cryptic"
really is much stronger...

"Evolution"
1999
This is one of the worst work by the great band.
Double CD contains about five new songs amid of Edge of Sanity's
early features
for the most part. All of those songs are rerecorded in the manner of
blend "Nothing But Death Remains" and "Cryptic" performed by more slow
and boring way. CD was called "Evolution", but it's NOT evolution. In
comparison with "Cryptic" band looses its power and brutality. In
comparison with records made with Dan Swano on board, band looses its
melodiousness. But what does remain? There's nothing worth to spend
your money, because if you like Edge of Sanity's earliest stuff
you will listen
original antedated by 1991-1993 records instead, if you don't, this
"Evolution" is also not for your soul.
The last word: This stuff is
good with respect to albums as "Infernal" and "Unorthodox", owing to
its unchaotic steady music structure. I like it. While one wants to
listen something in the even-tempered Death Metal style,
one is allowed to take this CD (1st or 2nd, it doesn't
matter; I prefer 2nd) to insert in CD-player and to be absorbed in sound.
