Cross Country Tramples Over Monmouth
By: David Gurney

One team that shined last year continues to dominate the region ranks, persistantly showing that South Brunswick has a premier program; the Boys Cross Country team. Starting from where the team left off, the South Brunswick Boys Cross Country team fared a successful fate at the Battle of Monmouth Class Meet. The talk of the meet was the underrated but heralded boys who staked their claim with several great showings.
Highlighting the team's day was a first place finish in the junior class division. Pacing the way for the juniors was Matt Randal, leading the way with a third place finish and terrific time of 17:14. Following the speedy Randal was Drew Biri, who remained close and finished with a fifth place time of 17:27. To cap off the day, Dan McDonald (18:06), Scott Yeager (18:42), and Tom Poorton (19:01) came up with 11, 19, and 20 place finishes, respectively. The juniors came away with 16 points, a first placefinish, and the admiration and respect from many in an 81 runner field. Matt Randal, the leader for the junior squad, responded:
" I'm really happy we won our third straight. We have a very talented team and I think we will do really well this year. Hopefully we'll be top 5 in the state this year."
In the other age groups, Bryan Kelly, the captain and lone senior, took a solid 13th place finish away with him, recording a time of 18:04 in a 95 runner field. In the sophmore division Ankush Patel took 33rd in 20:52 and in the freshmen division Ryan O'Laughlin took eigth with a 14:20 in the two-mile challenge. But many would say that Kelly carries this team, motivating them in practice and being the spark at meets. Tom Poorton had this to say about the senior captain:
" We are going to be a strong and talented team this year. We have a strong junior class that will carry this team far. But the team is led by Bryan (Kelly). Bryan pushes us in practice and gives us much needed experience and senior leadership."
Pacing out the rest of the squad are juniors Raphael Chejade-Bloom, Fred Rodriguez, and senior John McGee. The future looks promising for SBHS's up and coming athletic program. There is only one way this program seems to be going, and that is up.
