| FTC Slams Entertainment Industry
By: Jamal Adams Can you name something that's hypocritical, cynical and money-hungry? The Federal Trade Commission can and according to them it's called the entertainment industry. A yearlong report conducted by the FTC targets entertainment moguls for marketing towards the underage. This may come as a surprise to the naive, and disturbing to the rest as these "big-wigs" have denied any wrong doing in their marketing techniques for years. The FTC report cites a movie studio's internal memo that states the goal was to market a rated-R movie to "everyone between the ages of 12-18." Words cannot describe the hypocrisy displayed by the entertainment industry in recent years, however if you as a parent are negligent to the point that you don't know what your kids watch on TV maybe you shouldn't have had kids in the first place. It's been mentioned time and time again, it's the parent's job to monitor what their children do. If parents don't monitor what their children watch no one else will, thus allowing their kids to cruise over to whatever channel is churning out the most sex and violence. The FTC was right in pointing out what the entertainment industry has done. They have blatantly lied to their so called "beloved customers", however if they are looking to render some kind of punishment the best and quite possibly only way to do so is to simply not watch the product. It's such an easy alternative that the most intelligent may have overlooked it. Common sense would tell you that if you don't watch what they show then they wouldn't show it. The entertainment industry isn't out to corrupt kid's minds. They are out for ratings, once ratings decline the show will get canceled, if no one buys a movie ticket the movie will get pulled and there will be no talk of a sequel. Until then nothing of significance can be done to halt our local hypocritical, cynical, money- hungry friend we all know as the entertainment industry. |
