After escaping to Kyaro and meeting up with Nanami:

[Riou (the Hero), Nanami, and Mukumuku (the Flying Squirrel) leave Genkaku's dojo. A big question mark appears over Nanami's head. She jumps. Mukumuku ducks back behind Riou.]

Nanami:
"Huh! What! No! No! No!"

[Five Highland soldiers approach them.]

Soldier:
"You're Riou, aren't you. We're arresting you as a spy for the City-State of Jowston. Come along quietly."

Nanami:
"No! I won't let you take him! Riou, get ready. If we do it just like grandpa taught us, we can't lose."

[Riou and Nanami strike battle poses. They fight.]

Nanami:
"Huff huff huff.... Riou!!... You're breathing fast? You've been ignoring your training."

Nanami is the only one animated as if she is panting.

[Captain Rowd enters the scene. An exclamation point appears over Riou's head, then a question mark over Nanami's.]

Rowd:
"It's been a long time, Riou. Come along quietly. Do it as a favor for your old captain."

Riou:
[x] "Captain.... why....."
[ ] "No!!!!!"

Rowd:
"The real world is complex. It's not black and white anymore. Enough talk. Take them!!"

[The soldiers surround them.]

Nanami:
"Noooo!!! Help! Help! Let me gooooo!!!! Get your filthy hands off me!!"

[They are marched off. Fade to black.]


In front of the Atreides mansion:

[Jowy stands facing his stepfather (Marcel--it's only clear from the manga that Marcel is his stepfather), half brother (Marco), and two Highland soldiers. Two more soldiers stand behind Jowy.]

Jowy:
"Well then.... Well then, I guess you don't believe me......"

Marcel:
"That's right. Once you were my unworthy son, but no longer. From this day on, you are no longer an Atreides."

[Jowy steps towards his stepfather. The soldiers hold him back.]

Jowy:
"Why... why won't you believe what I say..... I... I'm your son, aren't I?... Or is the blood in my veins...."

Marcel:
"It hurts to look at you, Jowy   I can't recognize someone who has commited treason as a member of the Atreides Clan."

[Jowy backs away from him.]

Jowy:
"..............."

Soldier:
"Hey! Come!"

[Two soldiers grab Jowy's arms.]

Marco:
"Goodbye, big brother. You're not my big brother anymore   Goodbye Jowy."

Jowy:
"Please!!! Mother..... Let me see her!!! Let me talk to Mother!!!"

Marcel:
"Rosa said she doesn't want to see you....."

Jowy:
"You lie... You lie!! Stop! Let me go!!! I want to see my mother...."

[They drag him off. Fade to black.]


In a cell at the Unicorn Brigade Headquarters:

[Riou, Nanami, and Mukumuku are in the cell. They hear noise and approach the door as Jowy is tossed in.]

Jowy:
"Ooh.... Riou, Nanami... They got you too?"

Nanami:
"We did our best....... But, why do they think you're spies?"

Rowd (off-screen):
"I'll tell you."

Rowd enters.

Jowy:
"Captain....."

Rowd:
"Impressive.... surviving that jump into the river."

Jowy:
"Why did you?... What was that State attack?... Who was that man?!"

Rowd:
"I'm sorry, Riou, Jowy. That man, Prince Luca Blight of Highland, has great ambitions. And I have ambitions as well."

Nanami:
"Prince???"

Jowy:
"Why would one of the royalty...."

Rowd:
"Luca Blight needed a sacrifice to achieve his ambitions. The Royal Highland Youth Brigade was massacred by the State. This will be enough to whip the people up into a frenzy! So what do you think little girl? Aren't those City-State monsters just horrible?"

Nanami:
"Th, that's....... If I thought that Riou and Jowy had been killed by the State... I could never have forgived them, but.... I didn't know..."

Rowd:
"Exactly. But if it's not found out, a lie becomes the truth. Prince Luca needs to stir up the people to achieve his plans. And I have big plans too. I don't want to be captain of a bunch of kids. I want a job where I can make some real money. To do that, I need you two to die as a pair of treacherous spies. The truth of what really happened will die with you."

Nanami:
"That's... that's... You can't do that!"

Jowy:
"For that....for that you killed all my friends.... stole their lives...."

Rowd:
"Forgive me...... That's all I can say.... Well, it's about time."

Voice (off-screen):
"Captain Rowd. The preparations are complete."

Rowd:
"Well, you two.... It's going to be a painful death. For the little lady, too. Oh well, you can't fight destiny."

Oh, look at the ironic mention of destiny...

Jowy:
"......... Damn......   ... he won't get away with this..."

[Fade to black.]


In the streets of Kyaro:

[Riou and Jowy are in ropes. They are being led through the streets of Kyaro Town by five soldiers. The citizens watch. A fancy green carriage pulled by two white horses (with red plumes on their heads...) encounters them.]

Jillia (the girl in the carriage):
"What's all this shouting? Over here."

Carriage driver:
"They caught some State spies. They're taking them to the scaffold."

Jillia:
"I see."

[The soldiers pause in front of the carriage and salute.]

Jillia:
"They're just.... children.... How can they be spies.........."

Children? They're your age, Princess.

Riou:
[ ] "I'm innocent!"
[x] "........................"

Jowy:
"............   ....Who are you to question me?"

[Translation mistake:]

Carriage driver:
"I am Princess Jillia of the Blight Royal Family...."

One assumes the correct translation is "This is Princess Jillia of the Blight Royal Family...."

[Jillia turns to look at the driver.]

Jillia:
"Silence!"

Jowy:
"Princess? Well, then remember this... Riou and I haven't betrayed this country. This country has betrayed us. I won't forgive this. I cannot....."

Carriage driver:
"What did you say!! Who do you think you're speaking to..."

Jillia:
"It's all right. Let him speak. After all, he hasn't long to live...."

[The carriage drives away. The soldiers march off. Fade to the scaffold scene.]


The execution grounds:

[It is sunset. The scaffold is set up in a compound surrounded by pine trees and a tall, wooden fence. Riou and Jowy are in place on the scaffolding. Two soldiers stand behind them, beating them. Rowd stands before the scaffolding. Six more soldiers are behind him.]

Rowd:
"Here's your punishment for betraying your mother country, Highland, and for besmirching the honor of the Unicorn Brigade. Do you have any last words?"

Riou:
[x] "No, I don't."
[ ] "You're a jerk."

Jowy:
"........................"

Rowd:
"Good. You've resigned yourself to death. Ah, look at that sunset. It's the last sunset you'll see."

[Screen scrolls up to show the sunset over the tops of the pines. It's rather pretty.]

Rowd:
"Well, for me it's just another sunset. Although I suppose my whole life will change after this sunset as well. Up until now I've been forced to babysit this bunch of kids. But my bad luck has come to an end. With this on my record, my future is assured. Soon I'll be the captain of a real company in this area.... Huh?"

[As Rowd was doing his typical long-winded bad-guy monologue, the sounds changed from the sound of the boys being beaten to the sound of fighting. Rowd, in typical long-winded bad-guy fashion, didn't notice right away. The screen scrolls back to the scaffold scene. All the soldiers are on the ground. Flik stands behind Riou and Jowy.]

Flik:
"Too bad, but it looks like your path to success just took a detour."

[With two quick slashes of his sword, Flik cuts the ropes above Riou and Jowy's heads and the ropes binding their arms.]

Rowd:
"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

[Viktor enters from behind Rowd.]

Viktor (to Riou and Jowy):
"Ha. We finally caught you. Hope we didn't interrupt anything too important. You shouldn't have run off like you did. I was so surprised."

Jowy:
"Why......"

Viktor:
"Huh? You still don't get it? You two were my prisoners. I can't just give you up so easily."

Flik:
"This guy is real nosy."

I think Flik means Viktor, but I don't understand why he's saying this.

Viktor:
"Maybe so. Pohl came begging me to pull your chestnuts out of the fire."

[Rowd runs off.]

Viktor:
"Hey! Wait!"

[Viktor runs after him, but returns quickly.]

Viktor:
"Damn, he ran away! I could have caught him a few years ago."

Jowy:
"Wait, wait a minute. Nanami, my friend, is being held in the cell. We can't leave her behind."

Riou:
[x] "Let's go save Nanami."
[ ] "Let's hurry out of here."

One of these times, I'm going to play through the game choosing all the anti-Nanami answers...

Jowy:
"Of course, Riou."

Viktor:
"I get it. It looks like fun. Lately my body has been like lead."

Flik:
"What are we going to do with you. You've got a habit of sticking your nose in bad places."


In front of the Unicorn Brigade Headquarters:

Viktor:
"Okay. Flik, Jowy, Riou, let's go!!!"

[Flik sweatdrops.]

Flik:
"Don't charge ahead."

[They enter. Scene fades to interior courtyard. They walk in and react in surprise. At the far side of the courtyard, we see Nanami and Mukumuku facing five soldiers.]

Nanami:
"I'm warning you! out of my way!! I've got to save Riou and Jowy!!!"

[She blasts past them, knocking them down like bowling pins. Viktor, Jowy, Riou, and Flik all sweatdrop. We see Nanami and Mukumuku at the side of the courtyard now. They're facing two more soldiers. Nanami is hopping and a cloud of steam is over her head. Mukumuku just hops.]

Nanami:
"Ooo!! Now I'm really mad!! In the name of Grandpa Genkaku, Here's his secret Golden Bird Holy Flower Dragon Tooth Glory Punch!"

[She strikes a battle pose.]

Soldier:
"What's that..... W... wait......... Yaaaaaah......"

[The soldiers run away.]

Nanami:
"Okay. Hold on Riou, Jowy, I'm coming to save you!"

[The soldiers, Nanami and Mukumuku come zooming past the group. Mukumuku stops and joins the group. The soldiers and Nanami disappear off-screen. After a moment, Nanami reappears.]

Nanami:
"Hold on a minute, Riou and Jowy? What are you doing here?? They were going to execute you!"

[Jowy sweatdrops.]

Jowy:
"We came to... save you...."

Nanami:
"Huh? What? That's funny. I was coming to save you guys, too."

Jowy:
"By the way, what was that move before?..."

[Nanami sweattles.]

Nanami:
"Huh??? Oh! Don't worry about it. Let's just get out of here."

[They leave. Head out of town.]


At the town gate:

Nanami:
"Hey, wait a second."

[She turns to look back at the town.]

Nanami:
"Riou, Jowy..... I wonder if we'll..... ever come back here again..."

Jowy:
"........................"

Riou:
[x] "We'll be back some day."
[ ] "I don't want to come back."

Nanami:
"You think so? You're right. So it's just goodbye for a while."

Viktor:
"Hey! Let's just go and not look back!!!"

[They leave. Head through North Sparrow Pass.]


At the Muse-side of the pass:

[They approach the State soldiers there.]

Viktor:
"Good work, men."

[An exclamation point appears over the head of one of the soldiers. (It's the captain who had the "adult conversation" with Rina earlier and let Riou's party through.)]

Soldier:
"Oh! Viktor! Are you okay? Don't be so crazy."

Viktor:
"Ha ha ha ha ha. Sorry about that."

Soldier:
"Well it's okay cause everyone's fine, but if Muse found out that soldiers were going in and out of Highland, you'd be in trouble. Let's make it our little secret."

[Flik steps toward him.]

Flik:
"Or maybe you think it's okay that you let these guys get past your post?"

[Soldier sweattles and steps back.]

Soldier:
"I.... I.... well you see..."

Flik:
"It's okay. Don't worry about it. Like I said, everyone's safe...."

[The soldier sweatdrops.]

Soldier:
"Whew......"

[They leave. Head back to the fort.]


At the doors of the fort:

Viktor:
"Hey, we're back. It's nice to be back home."

Flik:
"What? This junky fort?"

[Viktor steams.]

Viktor:
"Watch your mouth. I like this place. It's got a certain charm. Right, Riou, Jowy?"

[Nanami sweatdrops.]

Nanami:
"This place?... Hmmm... I wonder..."

[Viktor sweattles.]

Viktor:
"Ha ha ha ha ha! A kid can't appreciate its greatness. Well, I'm going to go relax for a while. You must be tired too, so take a nice rest. If you have questions, ask Leona. She's the woman who runs the bar."

It didn't strike me as odd until my third playthrough that the fort would have a bar...

Jowy:
"So we're prisoners, I guess....."

Viktor:
"Huh? Well, that's true, but..... as long as you don't make trouble, you're free to do what you want. Why don't you go find recruits? We always need more of them."

That's sound military planning there. Why not have your prisoners do your recruiting?

Flik:
"Take it easy here until things cool down. Meanwhile I'll think of a good way to get back to Highland."

[Viktor and Flik enter the fort. You're free to wander about talking to people.]

Scary-looking black cat with big eyes:
"Sonya......"

WTF?

One of the soldiers eating at the bar:
"Riou, You should thank Pohl. He begged the boss to save you."

Another soldier:
"At least now I get 3 meals a day..."

And another soldier:
"The food has been getting better lately. I guess that means war is coming..."

Maid in Viktor's room:
"Viktor's room gets dirty so quickly! Oh well, that's just how he is."

Soldiers standing upstairs:
"You came back, Riou. C'mon don't be so sad. The Jowston State is a good place to live, too."

Soldier standing outside of meeting room:
"Viktor and Flik were once both famous warriors. They used to call Flik, 'Blue Lightning Flik'...."

Flik (standing in his room):
"Hey, Riou. How's it going? Are you getting used to living here?"

Viktor (looking out window in the meeting room):
"Aaaah....... nice weather."

Soldier at the desk in the meeting room:
"I'm glad that we got money from Muse, but if it means war..."

Viktor:
"I'm just happy to be getting 3 squares a day."

Soldier at desk:
"...................."

(Random observation: The blacksmith at the fort can sharpen to level 3. The blacksmith in Ryube can sharpen to level 2.)

[Riou's party goes off to recruit.]
