Joanne is the daughter of Donald (Don) and Mary Chaytor. She is from Mount Pearl, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. She has one brother, Edward (Ed). Her home parish is the
Anglican Parish of St. Paul, Goulds/Kilbride, NL.
The Church has always played an integral role in Joanne's life. She has served her church in various ways. She sings in the choir, directs the Junior Choir, is a Eucharistic Assistant and reads in church. She is also the Secretary of Vestry and a Synod Delegate. It was at Synod in 2003 that she was first introduced to the Volunteers in Mission (“VIM”) Program. Some material was handed out at Synod about this Program. After studying the material she became very interested and, after talking to others and praying about it, in early January, 2004, she filled out an Application. In December of 2004 she was interviewed and was subsequently accepted as the first Newfoundlander in the Volunteers in Mission program. In early January 2005 she was advised that she would be going to work with the General Secretary of the Anglican Church of Tanzania. Her commissioning service was held at St. Paul's on September 11th,
2005 and she departed Newfoundland on September 17th, 2005. After much
delay, she finally arrived in Arusha, Tanzania on September 20th, 2005.
She completed her 3-week Swahili language course on October 7th, 2005.
She left Arusha to move to Dodoma, Tanzania, on October 11th, 2005, and arrived on October 16th, 2005. She began her Volunteers in Mission work with Dr. Akiri, the General Secretary of the Anglican Church of Tanzania, on October 17th, 2005.
