Project 8: Weblogs

Learned what is important in evaluating websites: Authority, accuracy, objectivity, and currency. Authority for a webpage is that it tells you who is responsible for the site. The name or group that designed the webpage should be displayed on the page, so you know who is presenting the information on the site. Accuracy for a site means that the information displayed is correct and not falsefied in any manner. To support accuracy a website should have references to all the facts they provide on their site and/or have links to other site that support and prove the info they provide. Objectivity is portraying the information in a fair manner and not letting any personal prejudice or bias influence any conclusions portrayed on the site. All sites to an extent have some bias. The person or group who operates the website should be considered when determining whether the site is impartial or opinionated. Sites with too much bias often distort and misrepresent the subjects that are talked about. Finally, there is currency. The best websites should be up to date so you know that the site is well maintained and keeps its information current. The site should have a date or year that indicates when the site was last updated (usually at the bottom of the homepage). Also, there should at times be dates of when the information presented was posted on the site.

Here are a few quotes from weblogs that I found rather interesting:

"You'd be surprised how many advantages there are to a homeless lifestyle. While there is an aspect of difficulty and hardship, there is also an element of easy living. I was made homeless by circumstances, but I stayed homeless by choice."

- Survival Guide to Homelessness -- http://guide2homelessness.blogspot.com/

"The biggest hurdle Spielberg’s War of the Worlds had is our audience’s insatiable urge for everything to make sense.
When Superman was created, it was enough to say that he was an alien and in Earth’s environment he had powers. Today’s Superman? Well, he’s a huge solar collector, absorbing power from the radioactive waves of yellow stars blah blah blah…I don’t care. Why do people need so much realism in their escapism?"

- Mittman, Noah. Teradome -- http://www.teradome.com/

"Marion the Librarian said... You are quite clever! Selling your overdue book in order to pay your overdue library fine! It won't work. The fine will continue to increase and you will be forced to auction off your entire estate."

- Wilberforce, Esther. Topic Drift -- http://topicdrift.blogspot.com/

A Couple of Sites I've Found Useful:

Dictionary.com   --   http://www.dictionary.com/

       - Basically a dictionary on the Internet. I usuallly go to this site when I stumble across a word I don't understand.

Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   --   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

       - An online Encyclopedia that is written by many of its readers. Anyone who visits this site can edit the articles or create new ones. The drawback is that the person working on an article is wrong or feeling mishcevous, false information can be put on the site. But the introduction page on Wikipedia does say inappropriate changes are usually removed quickly. Anyways, when Dictionary.com doesn't have what I want to know, I have found myself repeatedly visiting here and I have yet to have any problems.

Go Convert   --    http://www.goconvert.com/

       - This site has the tools to convert between units of measurement from all corners of the globe. You are able to convert units of currency, weight, speed, length, volume, etc. for free.
