Boulder Weekly, Oct. 17-23, 2002.

On November 5, Coloradans will decide on a controversial initiative focusing on the people who don't speak English, mainly the hispanic community. Voters will have the choice between saving existing bilingual programs or implementing a special year of English immersion. Currently, non-speakers have several options, one of them is the Bilingual Education Program, where students are taught academic subjects in their native language while learning English. The initiative would suppress these options and replace them by a one-year English immersion where students will be taught in English only and attend the regular classes the next year with English speakers. Most Mexicans seem to fill the low-qualification jobs like road workers or janitors, except for Jenifer Lopez who is a very successful latino singer and actress.
