Cesar Chavez is a hero. A proposed amendement to the Colorado statutes suggested to designate March31 as Cesar Chavez day and make it a legal holiday for state employees. The proposition failed in last week's election by an overwhelming 79 % to 21%. Chavez is probably not the right kind of hero: he is a latinos' hero.He was a respected voice for social and economic justice for farm workers, especially hispanics, during the late 60s. His efforts, through peaceful strikes and boycotts, resulted in reforms that included safe and sanitary working conditions, higher wages and medical coverage. The vote result may simply be the defeat of "another wasteful state holiday". It may also signal again a disconnection between the Caucasian and Chicano societies.
