Boulder Weekly, June 20-26, 2002 Rocky Flats is a former Cold War nuclear weapons plant, a few miles south of Boulder, which should be turned into a wildlife refuge by 2006. For this, Rocky Flats should get rid of 6 metric tons of weapons-grade plutonium. This plutonium was supposed to be shipped to South Carolina where it should be converted into nuclear-reactor fuel. But the conversion facility doesn't exist yet and won't be funded by the federal government. The South Carolina governor is concerned that the Colorado plutonium will end up being stored indefinitely in his state and threatens to place state troopers at the state line and even to lie on the road himself to stop the secret plutonium shipment..
