How to Find a Surgeon in Northern California
Finding a good surgeon can be a difficult process for many people.
Most of the time your primary physician makes the decision about which surgeon to consult, but that decision may be made for a variety of reasons, most often ones of convenience. Most referring physicians have never had the opportunity to observe the surgeons to whom they refer in the operating theater.
Many people have told me that the most important factor for them is whether they understand what their surgeon recommends for them. Have they been recommended current advice? Are there alternatives? Is there a specialized procedure not available at your hospital or in your community that is available in a neighboring community or city?
Some surgeons utilize the newest and the most expensive methods. But is this technology proven to be the best treatment, and is it appropriate for you? Some people believe in the adage "Never be the first nor the last to embrace a new technology." Universities specialize in testing new and innovative treatments, often in well-controlled experimental environments. If you choose to help in testing new technology and can afford the costs associated with this, then a surgeon "on the cutting edge" may be right for you. If, however, your prefer the "tried and true" philosophy, then it is best to choose a surgeon well-grounded in established surgical principles.
Experience counts. Some surgeons spend years learning a few specialized procedures well, but have not had much experience outside their specific field of training. Other surgeons have broad experience in a variety of procedures, and can translate the skills from one procedure to another. A broadly trained general and vascular surgeon may be skilled in breast and hernia problems as well, but a plastic surgeon may have little experience in thyroid disorders or gallbladder problems.
A final consideration that is very frequently ignored by many referring physicians is how concerned is a surgeon with the costs of procedures and associated care? Some specialists are quite immune to the health care financial concerns of their community and the people they treat. Others have learned to suggest a variety of treatment alternatives that are effective and realistic to the financial position of those who seek their care. Some even provide an outline of estimated costs before suggesting a plan of care.
Surgeons are people who have trained for years to help you get past a physical problem as completely and effectively as possible. This can be done only by truly understanding your needs and being sure that the proposed treatment plan is right for you.
