Tell me if that makes any sense.
Because the guy's role at that point in time isn't acting. It's singing.
Unless you want to spend a lot of money on an artiste only to find out later that it's all misplaced, it's better to first listen to the music then find out what the artiste looks like. Difficult I bet when image is all part of marketing. But I did manage somehow to first listen to Nick Tze's music first without knowing anything about the singer. After I'd decided I did like his music, I did a bit of surfing to find out more about the singer. Then after a few days of ear-torture, I decide yes I want the album, and sheesh I hope he produces more music.
It was the same for E17. I was kind of thrown an old disc a year back or so and was still mixing them up with U2 (no offence to anyone but I was THAT BLUR *super-sotong* then). I decided I liked their beat although not so much for their lyrics. Ask me now if I can describe each member's looks properly, I can't!! But I still get their albums. In the same way, I'm stuck with this image of Kevin Bacon as Bon Jovi (don't ask me how), but Bon Jovi's voice is ageless and I'm as stuck on it as I am with that crazy impression.
I'm sure the marketing department now hate me. But think economics. You're encouraging a singer to go along the path which will end up with lost sales because the person will bank on looks and personality which appeal to the public instead of GOOD MUSIC. Infatuation is fickle (we have to admit it) and looks will one day die. But your voice doesn't. It gets better with age for those who practice it so often *e.g. ANDY LAU and DAVE WONG*(not me, cos I get sorethroats almost every other week from eating too many chocolates). Listeners are not all for looks, and like the stock market, they will have an idea about quality sooner or later. I'm not saying singers shouldn't have any fans and have pompous people like me sit back and criticise them all day (hey!! I'm not like that!!). I am A FAN of MANY SINGERS, loyally buying their albums hopefully because I like their music. And besides that, I guess it wouldn't hurt to like how svelte Kelly Chan looks and Nick's er...dynamic?...personality as long as it's not the only deciding factor.
Listening in a dark dark room
Unless you're irrecoverably and
hopelessly afraid of the dark, it's actually quite an experience to sit
in the dark, close your eyes and hear only music. Er...of course
be sure that you're not near the kitchen where your Mum is cooking otherwise
you'd be drowning in your drool in the dark and wondering why all the tracks
remind you of dinner. I sometimes feel like I'm being carried away
from my own world by the music, completely enveloped in another world.
Okay, okay, won't spook you. No it's NOT an out of body experience!!
It's just that you get to listen to the actual music without any distractions,
that's all.
Listening to it over and over
and over and over and over.........
Most of my friends think I'm crazy.
I can listen to the same song, just that one song, over and over and over
and over again without getting bored of it. Oh, so now you think
I'm crazy as well? Well...that's how I know if I will get tired of
listening to the same CD over and over again for the rest of its lifespan
after I'd bought it. I'm nuts I admit, but I normally am listening
to music almost every waking minute, from walkmans to setting up webpages
which you'd like to er...visit again?...hehheh? and listening to mp3s to
mobile hi-fis, etc. And then I can differentiate between those I
like and those I don't like. Some of the songs I don't initially
like grow on me, while others which stuck on at the first instant fell
off.
Still updating....
We need a more experienced person
to comment!! Ilene!!
