Although you'd never know it by looking at her, Yuffie comes from a long line of Ninja.  She forced herself into the group just to get a 'certain something'.  She's sneaky, arrogant, and "way" selfish.  But with her super shuriken and her special skills, there isn't anyone else you'd rather have on your side in a fight.

Underneath the arrogance, impudence, the immature acts and the seemingly child-like behavior, Yuffie is actually a very admirable girl.  There are many places in the game where it reveals her more blunt, fearless and straight-forward nature.  Her being described as 'ruly and unmanagable' comes from her deep-rooted desire for herself and her beloved hometown to be independent. And indeed, she is extremely independent; the youngest in the entire group of AVALANCHE, her skills in ninja and fighting are incredible to be on the same level as, or even higher than, the others of the group, who range from being 5 years older to more than twice her age. Yuffie has been out looking for rare materia since a young age, traveling around the world all by herself, which isn't an easy feat even with her fighting (and thieving) skills.  Her devotion to Wutai is clear in the game; she becomes a materia hunter in an effort to return the country's independence, regain her father's pride and will and to revive the failing tourist-based economy. If anything, Yuffie would probably be the character most likely to undergo a drastic personality change, for she is still young and going through adolescence and therefore more susceptible to outside influence and change.
