Fabilous Vino
What a weekend for the team! It is not even two months since Alexander Vinokourov crashed badly at the Tour de Suisse, practically breaking everything in his shoulder that was there to break. But what a fantastic comback at the Regio-Tour; two stage wins and the overall win! Even "Vino" was surprised by his success.
For me, Vino is one of the big favourites when he lines up for the road race in Athens on Saturday. Let's not get carried away with the success in the Regio-Tour - the standard at the Olympics will be much higher. But "Vino" still has a few days to adjust mentally to the challenges ahead..
Vino wasn't the only one who impressed me in the Regio-Tour. The whole team, but especially Stephan Schreck, performed magnificiently. The man they call "Schreckus" won the first stage and spent a day in yellow; he has a very bright future ahead of him, I am convinced of that.
Things didn't run quite so smoothly for us at the World Cup race in San Sebastian. Injured vertebrae caused "Klödi" to abandon. Our physio Birgit Krohme is taking care of him right now, and he should be back on his bike by Wednesday. Meanwhile, "Ulle" was plagued by two mechanicals on Saturday, the second of which came at a very inopportune moment and put him out of race-winning contention. But I am sure that the events in Spain won't perturb the two. They will be as keen as ever to go for it at the Olympics.
I am really looking forward to Athens now. And I am really curious to know if the lads from the T-Mobile Team will return form Greece with a few medals.
Bye for now,
Olaf
