![]() A Fine Day to Exit by Anathema If you are familiar with that award winning movie Traffic, you could follow me in my introduction of Anathema’s A Fine Day to Exit. When the scene shifts to events in Mexico (or even Southern California), the cinematography shows a rusty, monotone and duotone screen. Its kind of like black and white except its orange and white making you feel antiquated and backwards, or perhaps too sunny, no air condition, and feeling raw. Crappy. A Fine Day to Exit is a trippy album in that way. Its just like another one of those hazy dog day of summer where you're stranded with boredom, nothing else but listening to Beach Boys b-sides on the AM, no football, and only warm beer. Its a melancholic and psychedelic trip of a sad existence. And A Fine Day to Exit wavers like the rising heat - a mirage dense of monotone and duotone, looking lucrative but empty - a sad fucking story actually. Indeed Anathema, despite their almost catchy rock and roll, despite their changes and advancements sounding more like Beach Boys b-side and the Doors gone UK country-a-la Mojave 3, remains all about doom and depression.
