Recordings takes the exclusive songs from the various EP’s and singles issued during Porcupine Tree’s two recent albums Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun. A few songs are originally released here. During the Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun albums the band has shifted a bit away from a colder, electronic ambiance to a more warmer acoustic rock sound. Recordings, despite its haphazard compilation has its own theme going but is a bit removed from the warmth. Receding like the setting sun, the warmth fades to melancholic idling and prog rock fantasy. The pace is temperate, bristling now and then to a few chirpy songs yet for the most part nondescript. Possibly songs off special singles and EPs are extended mixes or more experimental and thus longer and less ornate. Fans of the happy completeness of Porcupine Tree’s recent efforts might need more patience with these recordings.
