Definition of "Phony"
Thousands of words are spoken everyday by everyone, everywhere. Words can be used to tell a story, ask a question, and even describe certain objects or people.
One of the many descriptive words in the English vocabulary is the word "phony." People in the past may not have known that a person, as well as an object, can be described as phony. It is important that when someone uses this word while talking about another person that they know exactly what they are saying about that person's personality and actions.
A phony person can best be described as someone with a fake personality. This does not mean that they are a mean person or that they lie to hurt others, but instead describes how they act in the presence of other people.
Famous people, such as actors and actresses, are often referred to as "phony." They are sometimes seen as fake, and even though they appear nice on camera to please an audience, off camera there are always rumors that a certain actor or actress is actually a very mean person.
Basically a phony person is a person with an internal lack of confidence. As a result of this, they are afraid or unwilling to share their personal ideas and beliefs for fear that they will differ from those around him, or her. Rather than voice their own opinions, phony people conform to those people around them. They do this because they believe that if they act like a person they will automatically please the person. They will do this even if acting this way goes against their true feelings and beliefs. A phony person does not have a sense of their true self.
