Virtual BreedingbyJane M Johnson |

The journey continues.........After a couple of days, Chickie is looking rather listless. She is panting a lot. She's not eating or drinking. Your mother comes over, and rushes Chickie to the vet late in the evening. You are forced to get to take Chickie to the emergency clinic over the other side of town, because no where else is open. They advise you that there is an additional fee of $100 for after hours appointments. The vet takes one look at Chickie, quickly asks whether she's been bred recently, which you confirm, and rushes Chickie into the surgery. The vet advises you that he believes that Chickie has picked up a sexually transmitted disease from Barry. You tell him that Barry looked very healthy and are confused how this could have happened. The vet looks at you carefully through his glasses and gives you a look that you know means, "you should have known better". All of a sudden you feel very guilty. The vet advises you that this disease is very common and invariably the dog does not have sperm that would even be capable of fertilising eggs. So, you think to yourself, I've just paid Harry $100 to get his dog to give my precious bitch an STD, and he had absolutely no chance of ever making her pregnant anyway. Your vet, not one to hold back on the bad news, also advises you, that your bitch will be unlikely to ever conceive herself again, given the complications that often result from this type of infection. There is no room for nicities today, and no time for a soothing cup of tea to think things through. The vet quickly puts Chickie on an intravenous drip, and pumps in a large amount of antibiotics. He also advises that to save Chickie's life, she will need to be spayed immediately. There is a small chance that she can be saved without being spayed, but you decide that that chance is not worth taking. You sign the consent forms for laboratory testing and for Chickie to undergo the emergency spay. You notice also that there is a quote for the process for $1200 which includes 1 week's stay for Chickie at the surgery while she recuperates. Luckily your mother can lend you the money. Chickie takes almost two weeks to get to a point where she can come home from the surgery. You put the additional costs on your credit card. You spend the better part of every evening of the next two weeks travelling across town to visit Chickie. Your performance at work has considerably decreased as you worry about your precious Chickie.
Decision PointYou decide at this point that you are going to not even think about breeding any more, unless there comes a time that you have the time and energy, and money, to do it properly.or, You now have to decide, whether to sit and think about all the good things in your life and all the things you have done well, or do you sit and cuddle your Chickie on the couch watching your favourite tv show. You decide to do both. And then tomorrow you're going to call Harry.
........This journey has ended, for now.
