Title:
Conflicts
in Coastal Areas
Location:
Marsaxlokk
Bay
Aims:
To observe the physical and human features
in the studied area.
To study the conflicts that arise due to physical and human
features in one area.
To suggest any possible solutions for such problems.
Equipment:
Maps of the location
Camera
Colours
Questionnaire
Method:
Go
on site and observe the most important features of the area.
List them separately as ‘physical’ and ‘human’ features.
Map
these features on a detailed map of the area using different colours. A
key will help you get a clearer picture of the situation.
In
pairs or as a group, try to interpret and analyse the map.
To do so you have to look at possible conflicts; e.g. fishfarms near
the Freeport. These questions
might help you:
What
is the area mainly used for?
Are
the activities in the area complementary or contrasting?
Explain why and how.
Present all the data and analysis in a report.
Once you have highlighted the most prominent conflicts, discuss what can be done to improve the situation.
Take photos or sketch diagrams to better illustrate your points.
Make sure you have the correct information (use reference books,
newspapers… )
You can also ask locals for any comments or information.
Present your data accurately and clearly.
Recommendations:
Marsaxlokk Bay has been chosen for this fieldwork as it has a large number of prominent features and activities going on, including the Freeport, the Oil tanks, the Power station, Fishing industry, and tourist activities. It is the best site possible for this fieldwork.
If you have problems in studying this site, you can tackle other areas of the coastal zone of Malta, such as the Bahar ic- Caghaq area where you have a high cost residential area e.g Madliena; a recreational park (Splash and Fun) and the Maltese landfill at Maghtab.
