Malta took part in the Mediterranean action plan to be prepared in case of marine pollution accident.

Barcelona convention – The Convention for the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea against Pollution

 

Malta signed an international treaty to protect the environment.

1989

Malta – EU Third Financial Protocol

 

The Environment Protection Department has obtained equipment to combat releases of oil into the marine environment.

 

1991

Environment Protection Act

 

This legislation was set up to protect the environment.  This legislation brought into being the Environment Protection Department.

 

1993

 

26 marine areas were recommended as Marine Protected Areas (MPA) coastal and 16 coastal areas were recommended as Nature reserves.  

The Maltese Government requested the assistance of Regional Activity Centre for Specially Protected Areas of the UNEP to establish Marine Protected Areas in the Maltese islands.

1993

Pollution Control Co-ordinating Unit (PCCU)

 

This was set up within the Environment Protection Department to combat oil pollution.

 

1994

Emergency Conservation Order (ECO) was issued for Ghajn Tuffieha.

 

ECO was done to protect this bay from pressures of development and other human interventions.

 

1998

Marine pollution control and monitoring in Malta

 

The Environment Protection Department commissioned UNDP experts to give them advise on how to monitor and control pollution in coastal areas.

 

2001

Environment Protection Act

 

This included modifications and enhancements of the Environment Protection Act of 1991.

 

Future projects

 

§         Construction of sewage treatment plants.

§         Better management for ship-generated waste.

§         Designation of Marine Protected Areas.
