Phone Calls and Fathers

Mac opened the door from the stairwell. From the first time that she had seen Harm's building she had strayed from the elevator. It always sounded like it was one ride away from plummeting to its death. She didn't want to be on it when it died. She closed the door quietly and walked the short distance to Harm's door. She sighed to herself and plastered a smile. She was early, but maybe they could use the extra time to work on their partner skills. Lately she felt like they hadn't connected in anyway. He was always blocked off when she talked to him. Just last week he had invited the Admiral up in Sarah. On her last flight. He hadn't asked her. It kinda hurt. She raised her hand to knock. The soft music, that had been a soft hum, was shut off.

"Hi. Yes I'd like to speak to Frank Burnett please." Mac stopped with her hand raised and held her breath.

"This is his son.
Yes I know he doesn't have a son. I'm his step-son.
Tell him its Harmon Rabb Junior.
Thank you.
Hi Frank.
No I just wanted to call.
Is this a bad time?
No, I just wanted to.
I never gave you the credit you deserve Frank." Harm laughed nervously.
"No I haven't been abducted.
Yeah I just. You know I was defending the SecNav's son?
Oh I mean the Secretary of the Navy's son.
Yeah.
Lt. Nelson.
He had so many chances to fix it.
I couldn't make him see that Frank.
Yeah.
He and the Secretary don't talk.
But you know what? The SecNav asked me to put him on the stand.
He was willing to kill his own career for his son.
Frank I.
Thank you for taking care of my mom. For taking care of me, when I didn't want you. I appreciate it.
Yeah. I know.
Next time I'm out." Mac's foot squeaked the floorboard.
"One sec. Come on in Mac." Mac opened the door to Harm's apartment.
"Go to go Frank. Mac's here for dinner.
Yeah she'll beat me if I don't feed her soon. Night Frank." Harm smiled as he hung up the phone.
Ready for dinner, Colonel?"
"First things first, Commander. My name is Mac." She stuck out her hand.
"And mine's Harm." He took her hand. Who needs White House Rose Gardens?
"Nice to meet you, Harm."
"I'm sure it will be a pleasure serving with you Mac."

"Mr. Burnett?"

"Yes Maddy."

"I was wondering who Harmon Rabb was Sir."

"He's my son Maddy."

"Sir? You don't-"

"I do in all the ways that matter, Maddy. All the ways that matter." He sighed and turned away from the window. "I wanna cut out of here early, is that a problem?"

"No sir."

"If you need me, I'll be with my wife."

"Yes, sir."
