Chameleon

Chameleon sat upon a branch
Quiet and still as he could be
He changed his ways so danger passed
Hide in safety was his decry

Young Ashy Gecko came along
Her skin a rainbow of color
She stood out in the dense jungle
Resolved to be like no other

“Foolish child,” Chameleon said,
“Why do you risk so much like that?
Being so different, it’s not right.
I hope you get eaten, you brat!”

“Relax,” Young Ashy Gecko said,
“If I hid my true self, like you,
No one would know the real me.
That’s why I risk a different hue.”

“But the predators can see you.
They can pick you off with ease,”
Chameleon told her, “Now please change,
Like me, and blend in with the trees.”

“I know the risk, my hidden friend,”
Young Ashy Gecko waved her hand,
“If I do, life will pass me by.
That can’t happen, you understand?”

“You think that way because you’re young.
You will change soon enough, you’ll see,”
Chameleon growled and shook his head,
“You’ll mature and be brown like me.”

“That may be, Mr. Chameleon.
On the outside I will be brown,
But inside I will still be me,”
Young Ashy Gecko then climbed down.

“Hey, I’m still me on the inside,
Aren’t I?” Chameleon thought a bit,
“I have forgotten who I am.
I’m no one now, and I can’t quit.”

Chameleon sat upon a branch
Pretending like he wasn’t there
He changed his ways so danger passed
Life passed by, too. He didn’t care
