Hello again
wrestling fans, its time for another edition of the
Blockbuster.
Today I'm going to compare WCW and WWF. I'm sure you have read
this kind of
comparison before, but keep reading. I'm mainly going to be
comparing the way
the big two are ran. I would include ECW, but I know absolutely
nothing about
that promotion.
Before I get to the main topic, I just have to comment of the
WWF's
"higher power" angle. It is one of the most brilliant
and well thought out
angles in wrestling history.
Macmahon, Bischoff, both over the years have impressively been
able
to get themselves over as heels. Both have had their companies on
top of the
wrestling industry. There is one important difference-
experience. Bischoff
has been with the company only for a few years, since the early
nineties.
Vince has much more experience. He has been through thick and
thin. Bischoff,
for the most part, up until recently, has only experienced having
his
promotion be on top. Now that the WWF has gotten itself back on
top, Eric has
no ideal what to do. WCW's rating continue to dwindle, and he
can't figure
out why. Vince has put to use two things that draw ratings, sex
and violence.
Bischoff won't do this, but it is the only way he can win
back the ratings.
Bishoff also needs to get rid of the established names and give
the
new, young talent some major pushes. Look at the WWF, Vince got
rid of all
the stars of the 80's, Hogan, Piper, Savage, Flair, and pushed
the nobodies.
Over the course of a year or so, he got two absolute nobodies,
The Ringmaster
Steve Austin, and Rocky Maivia, up to main event status, and look
what it has
done. They are now the two most popular stars in wrestling today.
Bishoff is
still using people like Piper, Flair, Savage, and Hogan, when he
should be
pushing the people like Disco Inferno (who needs a new gimmick),
Billy
Kidman, Chavo Guerrero Jr., and Buff Bagwell.
The WWF is also spicing things up by turning long-time allies
against
each other. Take the Macmahons. As long as I have watched the
WWF, Shane has
been at Vince's side. Now, they are mortal enemies. DX has been
broken up.
The New Age Outlaws are against each other. For years now in WCW
all its been
is basically WCW versus nWo. I have been hearing that WCW is
going to scrap
most of its stables and form all new ones.
WCW also has too many wrestlers on its roster. They have I think
about 70 people. WWF only has about 35 or so. If WCW cut back on
its roster,
they could be using Thunder and even Saturday Night to further
angles. The
WWF uses almost all of their prime time air time to further
angles. Even
Shotgun Saturday Night isn't just a bunch of jabronies that no
one has ever
heard of. Usually on shotgun they have some intercontinental
title defenses
and some people that you know like Goldust and the Hardy Boyz.
Basically, despite all of their similarities, Vince and Eric have
very different ideas on how to run a wrestling promotion.
Unfortunately,
Bischoff's plan doesn't work in the real world anymore,
especially if you
want to win ratings. Everyone remember- know your role!
