VI. Economic Trends
- The population of the six county region primarily served by Visions Five is 110,600, with half that being accounted for by Putnam County.
Population growth from 1980 to 1992 remained somewhat
flat in the five county area while the state's growth
rate exceeded six percent. The area's population growth
is projected to lag that for the state for the next decade.
- The region has a high percentage of its population over
age 65 (15.4 percent compared to 12.7 percent for
the state). This heavier weighting of older age groups
is projected to continue when compared to state and
national norms.
- The region traditionally has had an unemployment
rate considerably higher than that of the state, with an
annual average of 8.0 percent in 1991 compared to 6.6 percent
for the state.
- The per capita personal income in the six county area in
1990 was $8,650, or 55 percent of the state average.
- Transfer payments (pensions, welfare payments, social
security, etc.) account for 25 percent of the region's
total income, exceeding the norm for the state.
- About 36 percent of the area's total employment is in
manufacturing. The major manufacturing employer in the
area is the apparel industry.
- All of the counties except Putnam and Fentress have significant
outflow of retail trade dollars to other counties.
