III. Values

Every citizen has the right to clean, safe, comfortable housing.

The principal reason we have such a shortage of adequate affordable housing in our rural areas is that those in authority have not marshalled the resources available to us in an intelligent, aggressive manner and have not forcefully sought the additional resources needed to provide adequate housing.

One of the major problems now facing this region is the growing gap between the affluent and the working poor and those in need. This gap is destined to widen, causing a breakdown in the strong sense of community this area once had if we do not work to bring all parties together to plan more humane communities.

The numbers of the elderly poor in our communities is escalating rapidly, yet we have not been meeting their needs adequately. We can do better.

There is a growing distance between government and the citizenry in this region. Our people are feeling increasingly powerless and dispensable. We must work to reverse this trend since it is destroying our once strong sense of community.

Historically, this region has been extremely tradition oriented and averse to change. We must alter our mindset to adjust to accelerating change so that we can benefit from the new global economy, not continue to be its victim.

We need to help the public realize the serious condition of our natural environment and how rapidly the once rich natural heritage of our region is being depleted and despoiled for short term gain by a powerful few.
