Vincent 'Buddy' Cianci was elected mayor of Providence, RI in 1974 after launching his legal career in the Rhode Island attorney general’s office—working on the state’s anticorruption task force, where he helped to successfully prosecute several local members of organized crime.

In 1984, after abducting and beating up his former wife’s boyfriend, he pleaded no contest to an assault charge and was forced to step down.

Cianci was re-elected in 1990 after he became a celebrety on a local radio tlk show.

On June 23, 2002 Buddy Cianci was sentenced to 64 months in prison. He was convicted of racketeering and running a criminal organization from his city hall office by a federal jury.
