SLAVES OF THE GODSMITH

__________

THE BUGLES ARE CALLING!

__________

BY H. GEORGE BUSS.
Staff Correspondent.

__________

(From The Menace, Private Edition, January 25, 1913.)

Waterloo was lost. The night was black. Rain drearily fell drenching with tears, wrung it seemed from the eyes of the heavens, the bloody and bespattered uniforms of the Old Guard who, surrounded on all sides by the ruthless enemy, retreated. But even the retreat of these matchless soldiers of the flower of Napoleon's troops was without fear; with the regularity of the parade ground they halted to fire, reformed ranks and moved on---guarding with their lives the man who had thrown at dice with Fate for a world-empire and lost.

Came a shout through the dark in the triumphant, ringing tones of an English officer, "Surrender!"

It was Cambronne who flung back into the teeth of his victorious enemy in a voice that trembled not, "The Old Guard Dies But Never Surrenders!"

And so it is that we of The Menace, are cheered, are strengthened in the midst of the terrible conflict that is upon us, knowing that we have enlisted in the ranks of that matchless thirty thousand dauntless soldiers on the Firing Line, the splendid Old Guard who stand shoulder to shoulder, pledging service, sacrifice and if need be, even life itself that above the America of tomorrow and all the tomorrows---there shall float a stainless flag, the Stars and Stripes, untainted by one trace of Roman Catholic insignia!

(page 189)

To you of the Old Guard of The Menace Army I must utter a message of warning---another call to arms! Danger confronts us. And the issues are not in the last analysis, simply matters of petty religious differences, nor are they mere questions of politics in the lesser sense of the word; but the issues that we are facing are the issues of liberty or slavery, the prosperity or degradation, the education or mental darkening, the ultimate life or death of our own nation!

And what is this danger? Sheer indifference---sleeping citizenship that makes possible the insidious, the traitorous, the stealthy but ceaseless encroachments of the minions of the insatiate Romish Hierarchy---the Hierarchy that writhes and glides sinuous and snake-like throughout this whole land, blighting and searing and poisoning millions of minds and lives and human bodies!

The unwavering spirit of splendid courage, a courage that is unshaken in the face of defeat and death, that superb bravery which rang that fateful night in the defiant voice of Cambronne, of the French Old Guard, has always rather gripped my soul with deepest admiration....Knowing the heroic sacrifices and the superhuman efforts of The Menace Staff personally, and knowing, too, much of the toil, something of the terrible obstacles we have met side by side, and having shaken hands coolly with several of the dangers that have met us....I can no longer keep silent but, in this special edition, which is designed to reach only the hands of the Old Guard, I want to reach every soldier on the Firing Line with this message of the awakening that must come at once. And it is to you, the tried, the trusted, the alert and unafraid that we turn in this hour.

Hark, Oh! Hark ---brothers, citizens! The bugles are calling! And do you not realize that the blare

(page 190)

of their brazen throats is the deep-toned wailing of a blood-bought nation in danger? Danger! Yes, and what a danger! In the work of The Menace, in the publicity of its dauntless and unbribable columns, is one of our strongest hopes for the bloodless revolution that shall free us from the bondage of this horrible man-god of the Tiber. If the Romanists themselves were but ordinarily keen students of history, could they but clearly read the meaning of the story of Romanism in every age and in every nation, they themselves would herald The Menace not only as the messenger of warning but as the real protector of their own miserable and degraded lives. For if The Menace shall, through our redoubled efforts out there in the battle's front, triumphantly survive to spread this light of Publicity till it shall shine as the perfect day from East to West and from the frozen North to the sun-kissed South, then this revolution shall please God, continue bloodless and America shall be free from the blight of Roman Catholicism without a single bullet being buried in shrinking, human flesh.

But if, through indifference or neglect.....if because you do not heed the call, The Menace is throttled and that clear-toned voice is silenced, the, mark well this, the day will dawn and that soon in the hurrying course of history when America shall run red with the blood of such a war of Romish extermination as will cause Lucifer himself to turn his eyes from the sickening sight with a shudder!

And WHY?

Because you know and I know, that this horrible Hierarchy has already consummated half its devilish plan to "Make American Dominantly Catholic!" and in carrying out the other, that still darker half of this plot. Rome will inevitably encounter the indomitable spirit of America's fearless ancestry that died to make

(page 191)

this nation free. And when she does,----you know the rest!

I have met and clasped hands with many, many of the brave men and women who compose what I love to call the "Old Guard" of The Menace Army! In this, God has been good to me. No nobler, no more loyal or splendid soldiers ever marched to the bugle calls, of any propaganda army in the world. And nothing has so nerved me to fare forth in untrodden paths; nothing has so encouraged me to meet the daily dangers of my work as the thought and the memory of those faithful, those loyal, those dauntless thirty thousand of the Old Guard!

My message must close. I am not fearful as in the result. I know that there will be such a rally as will win the day.....

The same unconquerable spirit that breathed in these words of Napoleon, throbs today in the hearts of our Old Guard: "Hasten the attack! Press on! The enemy gives way---They are ours!"

IMMIGRATION BILL PASSES---ILLITERACY TEST THE GRIEF OF THE ROMANISTS.

__________

(From The Menace, No. 94, for February 1, 1913.)
Washington News Bureau of The Menace.
Washington, D. C., January 18, 1913.

Late Friday afternoon, January 17th, the House decided by a vote of 179 to 73, the division being nonpartisan, to consider immediately the report of the conference on the Burnett Immigration Bill. Even the Romanists knew that this indicated that the report would be adopted, but Roman Catholics are ever

(page 192)

had losers and the leaders of the Romans, Mann, Moore, and Sabath at once renewed their senseless filibuster which has staved off action since the House convened.

Mann claimed under a point of order that the conference report contained more than was before the committee and that they had brought in matter never considered by the House. This precipitated the second wrangle of the day, and side-tracked his own henchman, Hamill, the New Jersey Romanist, who wanted to postpone the bill.

Speaker Clark ruled that consideration of the bill must come first.

Before the vote on the question of considering the bill was taken, the Romans caused three roll-calls by making claims of no quorum.

As Menace readers know, the illiteracy test has been bitterly fought by Roman Catholics at every turn, that test which precludes from American shores any alien applying for entrance who is unable to read his native or some other language.

Although this compromise Burnett-Dillingham Immigration Bill contains an emasculated literacy test, it will be realized by our readers that it is really only valuable as the entering wedge, that it but opens the way for restriction that will restrict! Future measures will follow---this the Romish hirelings realize, and so they viciously opposed this conference report at every stage and took up more than six hours in rollcalls and wrangles.

Their fight against the measure finally centered upon that provision which excludes subjects of countries issuing certificates of character, when immigrants cannot furnish such certificates. Lenroot, of Wisconsin, Sabath, of Illinois, and Moore, of Pennsylvania, extended themselves in frantic outbursts in behalf of the undesirables.

(page 193)

The bill was finally passed by a vote of 149 to 70!

As agreed upon in conference, the bill also provides an increase of the head tax from four dollars to five dollars and requires steamship companies to furnish nurses and medical inspectors for steerage passengers.

__________

Catholic 'Abbess' Failed to Divide With Master Crooks!

__________

Dispatches from Rome that reached Washington under date of Jan. 11th conveying the dreadful news that Miss Margaret Miners, head and founder of the Catholic "Third Order of St. Francis For Women," with convents at San Francisco; Nottingham, England; and St. Elena, had coolly ignored the god-like authority of the "archbishop" and that above all she has utterly refused to turn over the profits of the convent game together with the property she has acquired to the hierarchy, were received by Bonzano, the emissary of the man-god pope and his coterie of Catholic dupes and hangers-on here with deep guttural grunts of rage!

This female Alexander Dowie has committed the one unpardonable sin in Romish estimation---she has refused to give the lion's share of the spoils of the game to the master crooks!

According to the dispatches received here, Miss Mines learned the convent game in Buffalo, N. Y., where twenty-five years ago she was employed in a convent. She left Buffalo and later her Romish friends there learned that she was conducting a sort of boarding house for homeless girls in San Francisco. Later, Miss Mines enlarged this establishment and changed it into an orphan asylum under the

(page 194)

name of "The St. Francis Girls' Protectory."

This institution prospered beyond even her wildest dreams and following the usual Catholic tactics, the California state officials gave it a handsome yearly subsidy out of the taxpayers' money.

One day the awful report reached the expansive ears of the 'Frisco "archbishop" that Miss Mines had bought considerable property in her own name. (!) And, horrors!---that as the "abbess" of the "Third Order of St. Francis" she was exacting unlimited obedience from her helpers, that at they were collecting alms for the institution and that Miss Mines was not dividing!

Then the "archbishop" sat up and took considerable interest in the game. Gathering his sanctimonious skirts around his elephantine legs, he waddled down right fast to demand an accounting. But, Alas! Miss Mines actually refused to acknowledge that the "archbishop" was her SUPERIOR, and worst of all, even refused to turn over the institution and the property to his "howliness!"

Consequently the poor, defrauded "archbishop" got exceedingly busy with the wires that lead to Rome. Promptly the "prisoner of the Vatican" commanded that the obstreperous but nervy lady Dowie put herself and her property in the hands of Catholic "spiritual supervisors" and that she follow their advice.

Miss Mines again refused to obey.

Then her St. Elena institution was declared closed by the power of the man-god!

Her Nottingham convent next drew the venom of the Beast.

Now the Catholic "Congregation of the Propaganda" (whatever that may mean) in Rome has ordered "Monseignor" Riordan, that doughty "archbishop" of San Francisco, to sue Miss Mines in the civil courts to "recover" the several thousand

(page 195)

dollars' worth of real estate which she has had the audacity to record in her own name, after securing the property through her own efforts, having the suit on the self-evident fact that she learned her effective convent trickery in that unsavory Catholic institution in Buffalo, and that she ought to divide with the "Fagins" that taught her the inner mysteries of the game!

So there!

__________

Curley and the Immigration Bill.

__________

January 11th the conference of both houses of congress finally agreed to further modify the "literacy test" of the present senate bill, which is the emasculated result of the labors of the Dillingham Immigration Commission, to further conform to the plot of the Romish Hierarchy to over-ride American free institutions with their tools, the foreign undesirables from Europe's lowest races.

The senate bill previously provided in the literacy test that immigrants be required to read and write, but as the measure will not be reported to the two houses applicants for citizenship will only be required to read.

It is expected that this report will be presented in the two houses this week and that both will accept it.

And the priest chuckles in relief!

Anent the immigration bill, it is significant that Congressman James M. Curley, of Massachusetts, a typical Romanist and one of the bitterest opponents of any immigration restrictive measures was the speaker of honor a few days ago (January 6th) before the "Ancient Order of Hibernians, Division No 1," at the Potomac Bank Hall, at which time he burst forth in an impassioned panegyric on the Irish, the Germans, the Italians, the Jews and all other races of immigrants

(page 196)

who, he said, "now constitute the most desirable class of citizens, and form the backbone of the nation!"

Representative Kinkead, of New Jersey, and Representative Taggart, of Kansas, were also present and spoke in the same vein.

Menace readers will doubtless remember that this Curley, of Massaschuttes, obtained considerable notoriety last December when on the floor of the house fighting the immigration bill, referring to the Boston Tea Party, he said that "it ought to be called the Boston beer party, instead of 'Tea Party,' having had its inception in John Duggan's saloon instead of the Old South Church!"

As a result, Curley was denounced by the Daughters of the American Revolution, especially those of Massachusettes ancestry, and another of his statements that "the first gun, the one heard around the world, was not fired at Concord, but at Portsmouth, N. H.," did not particularly add to his popularity. To mend matters, Curley had the phrase "John Duggan's Tea Party" inserted in the Congressional Record, but that didn't seem to help much!

Really, this space is too valuable to devote further to such an absurdity as this Curley person, but the writer merely wanted to exhibit him as a shining and typical example of the mental caliber of those tools of Catholicism who have been used to lead this battle against a protective restriction of the hordes of ignorant, criminal and low-browed aliens that are swarming into this land of ours!

Remember the name when he barks some more!

__________

Warnings From Enemy's Press.

__________

"The National Hiberian," published by Pat. J. Haltigan, at 614 Louisiana avenue, N. W., in this city, carries at its masthead above the title a card containing

(page 197)

he boast, "The largest circulation of any Irish or Catholic publication in the world!" The current number for January 15th has just reached my desk and for the benefit of our awakened patriots on the Firing Line everywhere, I call especial attention to the following paragraphs which I clipped from the editorial page of this foreign-flavored purveyor of pungent purgatives, because the information contained therein, though disgusting to free-born Americans, is valuable and significant!

Here are the clues:

"One of the first acts of Governor Sulzer, of New York, after his inauguration was the appointment of Major General O'Ryan as head of the New York State Militia. General O'Ryan was removed by Governor Dix shortly before retiring, and much dissatisfaction was caused by his act. Now that justice has been done, and General O'Ryan has been restored to his rightful position, the utmost good feeling prevails among the members of the National Guard and the public generally. "Tell the Hibernians of New York and of the whole country," said Governor Sulzer, as he shook hands with the editor of the National Hibernian shortly before leaving Washington, "that they will have a friend in the Governor's chair at Albany while I have the honor to fill it."

* * * * * * * * * * * * *

"There will be enough members of our order in the next national house of representatives to form a good sized Division. An effort will be made to perfect the organization of a Congressional Division in the next few months. Some of the ablest orators on both sides of the chamber are proud to claim membership in the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Conroy of New York, Curley of Boston, Taggart of Kansas, Burke of Pittsburg, Donohoe of Philadelphia, Korbley of Indianapolis, Reilly of Connecticut, Hammill

(page 198)

and Kinkead of Jersey City, McDermott of Chicago, and a dozen others in the present congress are active members. There will be nearly seventy Catholics in the house of representatives after March fourth and four in the senate."

__________

Recent Patriotic Gatherings.

__________

Intense interest and a great wave of enthusiasm have marked the rapid growth of various patriotic orders in this city, orders that stand solidly aligned against the political intrigues and encroachments of Romanism.

Monday evening, January 13th, I had the pleasure of attending District of Columbia Court, No. 1., Guardians of Liberty, where your correspondent was royally received by an enthusiastic gathering of patriotic citizens. Twenty-two new applicants for membership were filled that one evening. This Court is growing beyond all expectations. Your correspondent was introduced and by request made a short address from the Menace viewpoint on the vital issue of the day, which was received with deep attention and appreciative applause.

Tuesday evening I was honored with an invitation to speak before Andrew Jackson Council, Junior Order United American Mechanics in their hall in the American Home Life Bldg., where I found a hall filled with fearless, staunch supporters of every principle for which The Menace stands---in fact, nearly all are soldiers on the Firing Line. This Council is alive, alert, and is doing some practical work in a quiet way that will make Rome sit up and howl some more soon.

The really big event of recent days in the patriotic circles of Washington occurred Wednesday evening, January 15th, when the annual visitation to Mount Vernon Council, No. 10, Junior Order of United American

(page 199)

Mechanics was paid from the several Councils of Maryland, Virginia and the District at Mount Vernon Hall, Third street and Pennsylvania avenue.

The attendance was surprisingly large. Patriotic speeches were made by several representatives of various Councils present, followed by able addresses by Mr. John H. Noyes and by Congressman Finley, of South Carolina, both of whom took up the pending immigration bill and gave voice to splendid appeals to virtue, liberty and patriotism. Your correspondent was introduced and was given an enthusiastic hearing.

These gatherings are the significant surface indications of a mighty under-current of awakened American loyalty.

__________

Senators Perform for K. of C.'s.

__________

The gallant Knights of Columbus of "Carroll Council, No. 377," celebrated right merrily their fourteenth anniversary Wednesday evening, January 15th, at that fort-like Knights of Columbus Hall, located at 606 E. street, N. W., in this city. The hall was pretentiously draped with flags, Catholic emblems and flowers.

Henry F. Ashurt (remember that name!), Senator from Arizona, made the gorgeously and radiantly Romanist one big speech of the occasion. Being better acquainted with the history of Catholic organizations than with that antedated document called the Constitution, he proceeded to give a lengthy history of this "Council," claiming that it was named for "archbishop" John Carroll, of Carrollton, founder of the (Catholic) Georgetown University.

The one stupendous and really amazing mouthful that this Arizona senator succeeded in evolving from his system, a mouthful that of course brought him a

(page 200)

boisterous ovation from the "Knights" and their hangers-on present, was this:

"To be a true Knight of Columbus means to be a patriotic citizen!"

The usual aggregation of public officials and servants of the people was present, dancing servile attendance upon this unpatriotic and traitorous organization of armed and drilled guerillas, oath-bound, under the name of "Knights of Columbus," to forever extinguish Old Glory beneath the filthy folds of the yellow and white banner of Rome!

* * * * * * * * * * * * *

After the speech-making customary in the public exhibitions of this mutual admiration society thus staged for the gullible, a "buffet luncheon" was served. Dancing followed, of course. Then _____?

Your correspondent would strongly impress upon Menace readers the exceeding convenience of a ready reference list of all U. S. senators and congressmen that thus betray their Romish alliances by their presence at various Catholic "ceremonies" here in the shadow of the Capitol.

List the undesirables!

__________

Graft Reaches Beyond Grave.

__________

An interesting caveat of recent date is on file in this city protesting against the probate of the will of Margaret Barry, a devout Catholic dupe, which again shows the terrible grip of priestcraft on the minds of the superstitious victims.

Mrs. Barry left an estate valued at thirty thousand dollars, the bulk of which was left by her will, through the "undue influence" of Priest J. M. O'Brien, to St. Peter's Catholic church, of Washington, D. C. Under this curious will three hundred dollars were given to both St. Joseph's Orphan Asylum and St.

(page 201)

Anne's Infant Asylum; legacies of two hundred dollars to the "Little Sisters of the Poor," and the Society of St. Vincent De Paul. The executors were directed to pay the rest to the "rector" of the St. Peter's church for the support of the parochial school kept up by this Romish aggregation.

George Barry, a nephew, and Mary Geoghegan and Mary M. O'Connor, nieces, who receive fifty dollars each under the will, allege in their contest under influence of the priest, O'Brien, and the mental incapacity of Mrs. Barry.

True. The cross-bearers are the mental incapables the world over!

__________

Bryan's Son in Catholic School.

__________

W. J. Bryan, Jr., is president of the youngest and largest freshman class of the (Catholic) Georgetown University Law School here and on the evening of the 10th of January he presided at the first annual banquet of his class at the New Ebbitt House in the city. C

harles A. Douglas, the Catholic toast-master, referred to young Bryan as "the worthy son of a worthy sire." This elicited tremendous applause and the Catholic college yell for young Bryan.

And you, too, W. J.?

We always thought so.

Enough said!

__________

Morgan Buys Catholic Degree.

__________

The Catholic University, of this city, has sold an honorary degree to J. Pierpont Morgan. Part of the purchase price consisted of fifty books in Coptic, dating from 800, A.D.

Whatever this crafty old financier gave "to boot"

(page 202)

is of course clear gain to the Romans---they need the money---and Morgan needs the brains. Too bad that brains cannot accompany "honorary" degrees! We had thought that J. Pierpont had long ago learned to let the "other fellow's game" alone.

But Rome has chaff for all sorts of birds!

(page 203)

MESSAGE OF A MODERNIST TO THE MAN-GOD.

__________

The greatest of these principles of liberty is freedom of conscience. The relations of each man's soul with his Creator are a matter solely for each man's conscience, subject to nothing else than the fundamental morality and the social peace which must govern all human activities. Freedom of conscience is the highest of all freedom, it is the life-principle of every people that deserves to be called civilized. Precious as it is, fundamental as it is, it has been most painfully won. Through blood, and flames, and exile, and all terror, the right to worship Deity as conscience dictates has fought its way. Today, we blush for shame that it should ever have been violated. Today, we look back as to the highest type of heroism upon the exile banned by tyranny because he would not lie; to the martyr dying at the stake because he would not bend the knee to what he believed to be falsehood and superstition. Sovereign Pontiff, do you ask why the Papacy is despised and rejected? It is, first of all, because this priceless right of conscience is denied as an impious falsehood by your Roman See; it is because the Papacy's history with regard to it, is perhaps, the foulest infamy recorded in the annals of the world.
