Note to beginners:

Pearl Jam, like nearly all rock bands, uses the minor
pentatonic scale for almost all of their solos. If you don't know this
scale, commit it to memory. You'll be amazed at how much mileage you can
get out of this one pattern:

E------------------------------------------12--15--
B----------------------------------12--15----------
G--------------------------12--14------------------
D------------------12--14--------------------------
A----------12--14----------------------------------
E--12--15------------------------------------------

This is the box pattern for the E minor pentatonic scale. Note that there
are two notes on each string, the first being 12 and the second being 14 or
15, so it's pretty easy to memorize. Eventually you'll want to learn the
notes of the scale up and down the whole neck, and throw in other notes,
but as I've said, just using the box pattern notes and some slides, bends,
hammer-ons, and pick-offs, you can make some pretty cool-sounding solos.
Anyway, enough theory.
