Sticks & Stones May Break My Bones But Words Will Never Hurt Me

How true is this old childhood saying? It is becoming apparent there is no truth to this saying. Words appear to effect the human emotional well being much more than people would like to admit or realize. Many people, if not most, are emotionally sensitive to what family, friends and peer groups think and say. Cruel words, especially repeated continuously in childhood do adversly effect a person's emotional well being and self esteem and self confidence well into adulthood. These cruel words combined with other negative experiences may also adversely affect the physical health of a person.

This poem does sum up how words effect us all.

Every kind word we speak is like the ripples from a raindrop,
spreading joy and peace seemingly without stop.
But every cruel word continues also, perhaps all the way to the sea.
It's hurt and negative effects live on in you and me.
So we must be very careful of the words we choose.
For if we are not, then in the end we will all lose.
