Harmony 4: Attacking SATB questions for the final exam

Before you start:

1) Identify the key - look at the key signature, and then determine if the home key is major or minor by looking at the final cadence (is always perfect in the home key).

2) Look at accidentals to determine where there is a change of key: key changes usually extend until the end of a phrase (ie. if you change key in the middle of a phrase, keep the new key until the end of the phrase).

- if the home key is a minor key, the lack of a raised leading note MIGHT indicate a change of key, or simply the MELODIC MINOR scale if notes VI and VII are placed next to each other.

3) Determine all the cadences.

As you work through the exercise:

1) Decide all your chords before you start filling in the notes.  Use good chord progressions.

2) Use a variety of chords (including 6 chords).

3) NO JUMPS (except in the bass).

4) Keep the rules of special chord movements in mind.

5) Remember accidentals for new keys and raising leading note of minor keys.
