Day of the Dead 2003
This is my favorite Mexican Holiday.  This year we were late getting to Xoxocotlan
because they celebrated on Halloween night when we had a party.  It was nice, however,
being there without the crowds and the night watchmen showed us around.  The next
day we went to the Pantheon Cemetery where they had more flowers than a Rose Bowl
parade.

We arrived in Mexico City on October 25th
to meet Alexis and the city was already
filled with Day of the Dead altars.  This
one is in a store in San Angel.

This skeleton repreesents Friday Kahlo.

Returning to Oaxaca, we found flower sellers
at every market.

Every business had an altar including this
beautiful one in a hotel courtyard.

On November 1st, we went to Xoxocotlan.
there were still many flowers, candles,
and sand paintings to be seen.

This grave with balloons was for a baby.

Alexis admires flowers at one of the many
gravesites.

The moon was shining as this angel
kept watch over its grave.

Sand paintings are a special art.

This sand painting depicts a famous
calavera or skeleton figure.

Glitter is added to the sand to give it a twinkle.

The entrance to the Pantheon Cemetery
was adorned with flowers.  Unlike the
Xoxocotlan Cemetery, people gathered here
during the day time.

Families gather, often with musicians, at
the gravesite.

It appeared that no grave was left unadorned.

This sand painting depicts the Last Supper.

Alexis, CJ, and Shannon pose by a mural
near the cemetery.
