21 Grams

gave a feeling of <<momento>> from start till end. the overlapping & intertwining timeline and events, (the resulting hundreds of "?" over the audience's heads), narration from the antagonist, & the parts with just the breathing from characters and no background music. the big difference is, <<momento>> has a flow to it, which 21 grams lack. the events and idea behind <<21 grams>> is just too simple to be put into such a way.

bb says this one is like <<traffic>>, but better. <<traffic>> is just too long and she couldn't finish watching it before she fell asleep. again, i have only an unwatched vcd. so here's a math question: arrange these 3 movies in ascending order of better-ness :P.

anyways, it's quite easy to see where the story is going, once you figure out sean penn with no beard and sick sean penn with beard is the same person. maybe it's just me.

the idea behind the movie is quite heavy, though there's not very much to think about (how seldom is this for the too-many-thoughts vivi!!) some parts during the middle of the movie seem too long and boring. (...and bb fell asleep.)

the way jack (benicio del toro) lives his life according to the bible LITERALLY disturbs me a lot. but in reality, there ARE some people who act like that. they don't really understand the meaning behind these "dao li"/spirit but you can't deny their strong faith.

the way a person lives, whether living his own life or "gaining it back" in this case, no matter how short the time, will have an effect on someone somehow. you won't live for no reason. in this case, sean penn's lengthened life gave both cristina (naomi watts) and jack back their peace of mind.

guess that's what the idea of "21 grams lighter after death" is about. never fully understand it and didn't catch the words too well towards the end of the movie. will look it up in scripts later if i have time.

so never say you've got no purpose in life.

interesting side topic: the cooler water container that jack drank from at the beginning of the movie reminded me of the one in steven's. wish everything is going well for him and his family. (oh btw, conincidentally, i'm writing this on his bday today. should send him an e-card after this. :>)
