Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

not too familiar with sea voyage adventures. knew it would be way more interesting if I knew some background info on sea voyage customs (like the ranks, dialect, or songs) and if i remember any world history learned from s.s. (and dav wondered why all sea captains are named jack…interesting indeed.)

don’t quite like the storyline as i don’t find it too interesting. a proud captain struggling between his duties as a voyager and as a friend, with the lives of his whole crew dependent on his decisions. doesn’t sound too interesting to me. the scenes are filmed quite well though: nature’s strength, depicted in the storm and lightning scenes, are considerably hard to be filmed. (maybe i’m wrong; i’ve watched too few of these movies.)

never too fond of russell crowe. and he’s not particularly good in this one either. the doctor’s role played by paul bettany (never knew him before, or do i not recognize him?) was quite appealing. this “fighting doctor” has all the charisma of a well-educated gentleman (who plays a cello!!) and that of a warrior. the music pieces of aubrey and the doctor (still dunno his name) is a plain beauty have to buy/download its soundtrack just for that.

talking about soundtrack, the voice of that cowardly lieutenant (forgot his name & dunno his rank. suck.) was so so impressive when he sang but just one phrase, a capella. reminded me of the voice of the guy who started “drink with me” in “les miserables”. both voices are so unique, not rich, but definite and clear (both not exactly the right words…I ran out of vocabs, help cal!!).

the scene that has a certain impact on me is the one where aubrey has to decide whether to cut off the fallen pole (it’s called the “fore topgallant”, i checked) and leave one of his sailor behind, dying for sure. the idea of controlling a life in one’s hand is quite unbearable. it’s not only hard to choice between saving the life of one and risking those of many, it’s just doesn’t seem correct. how can a person assume the role of god?

a phrase that struck me a bit is when the doctor described aubrey as “not used to defeat”. don’t know if that’s the phrase to describe myself. haven’t experienced much of a “big” failure, i sometimes fear if I can really handle the pressure. i found myself very lucky as i was always taken care of by my family and friends. (dav even took the time to buy me a jade ornament to
解太歲!! thanx a bunch~) i guess they help shared the “aftermaths” of these failures (however small) of mine. (this is especially seen in my dad: he has been busier than ever since i came back to hk~).

another thing i wanna comment on is the excellent transition between the tense moment where the young general’s arm was to be cut off to the scene where the workers/carpenters were busy repairing and repainting the ship’s goddess symbol (there must be a technical word for that…told you i’m short of vocabs). it successfully bring the heavy mood back to a lighter one. did a good job on that.

luckily one thing i know of is the figure “siren” from ff’s gf (one of my fav water gf from ff8). the seductive nymph is, i guess, a symbol for pirates at sea. thus disguising a battleship with the name “siren” easily evaded the enemies’ attack.
