the whole
film is a beautiful painting itself. with the lighting, background, props and all, every
scene is a masterpiece on its own. when i first saw the trailer, i was captured
by the resemblance of scarlett johansson to the girl in vermeer’s
famous painting. seems
like she’s jumped right out of the painting. but after examining it in
more detail, she looks not one bit like the artwork! (just imagine the power of
the filmmaker…)
and I kinda
like colin firth, but for some odd unknown reason, i can never
identify him and never know which film he acted in (except for
bridget jones’).
don’t even
try this movie if you’re looking for anything real exciting (don’t
think you’re gonna be interested in the title anyway if you’re
that kinda person).
it doesn’t really have a full plot, no forbidden affairs
and stuff like that, but it captures the lives in 17th
century europe. from
the plainess of servants and maid, to the emptiness of the rich,
and the selfishness of the artist. simple ordinary human lives.
i guess the
affair here is so implicit that many may have easily missed. it was an affair of the
heart. no physical
contact, no explicit emotions. but if you ask me, there does exist an affair
between griet and johannes.
johannes liked griet because of her uniqueness, of the
inspiration she gave him; but not much so as griet loved
johannes. yes, one can
say that she loved him, in a sense of both admiration and
self-adoration. it’s
not hard to imagine a young girl falling for a famous artist, and
it’s even easier to see her love for him for realizing her
talents and recognizing her as his muse. she’s special in his
eyes, in the eyes of this famous temperamental painter, which
made it all so tempting and irresistable.
the whole
movie is slow yet it’s not boring, as you can see the filmmaker taking
heart in each and every scene. it may not be what you’ve expected, but you’ll
certainly love it if you enjoy fine art and cinematography.
