Secondhand Lion

i saw this movie synopsis on yahoo movie page back in hk, but it was never on. so when i got the chance, (kinda weird considering i’ve almost forgotten about this movie when i saw it on the shelf of the rental, since this movie is kinda 冷門 i think.) i decided not to wait any longer (and so i rented two at once, with mona lisa smile.) and i’m glad i did.

not only is the story great, the meaning behind is great, and of course, the acting is great!! (haley is all grown up and his acting is only getting better and better. great kid.) it’s a story-telling story, and it just builds on itself so naturally that you’re drawn to liking the characters, and the dogs too…there’s a pack of five!!! and a pig, and a lion, of course. you’re probably saying, “no wonder you’ll like it.” but i’m sure you’ll love it too. i mean, this kind of disney-like movie (dunno if it’s really from disney? i think not.) is what keeps dreams alive. like the idea behind the movie, somehow you just need something in your life, some belief, that keeps you going. no matter if it’s the truth or not, you’ve got to believe in something, have faith in it, with all your heart. that’s what keeps a person alive. a person like me, who’s lost faith and confidence in everything (well, almost) needs this kinda movie, to keep my dreams alive.

it somehow reminds me a lot of <<big fish>>, and i can say that it’s quite a match, if not better. and it reminds me somewhat of <<billy elliot>> too. there’re some cute comics there too, which has a “kevin & hobbes” style to it. i love that.

i think i’m gonna buy the dvd. i recommend it to each one of you. so please borrow it from me or from somewhere else, watch it first before continuing on reading!!!

the lion in the movie, doesn't really play a significant role or part, but she symbolizes something very significant: belongingness. everyone needs that. you need to be rooted somewhere, and have a sense of belonging, otherwise everything will be meaningless. the lion, even, knows just where she belongs. “i think she’s happy.” “i think she is.” this short little dialogue between uncle hub and walter (haley) is so short and yet, has so much impact. what else can one ask for other than being happy?

and when you’ve lost that sense of belonging, together with the purpose in life, you’ll rather be dead sooner, literally in the context of the movie, where uncle hub didn’t have a purpose in life anymore. but when walter reminded him of what he meant, just to be alive, just to be there, to uncle garth and walter himself, “i know you miss her an awful lot, but if you go, we’ll miss you just as much,” he knew he couldn’t go just yet. they needed him. somehow, i just wish these words are said to me.
