the content of
this movie is completely different from what i expected from the
trailer! maybe i
wasn’t paying attention while seeing the trailer (shown
before <<girl with a pearl earring>>; was busy
talking to both bb and my sis at the same time); i thought it
was a movie about computer hackers. but it turned out to be quite a
good movie (and a short one too).
this movie is based on a true story. and like all alike, it begins with
some facts, including names and dates, showing on screen. and once it showed the name
stephen glass, i realized the movie title “shattered
glass” is actually a play of words. reminded me of will hunting
from “good will hunting”.
noticed from the beginning credits that this is produced
by tom cruise. no wonder
it has a <<the firm>> feel to it. (even though <<the
firm>> is from, i dunno, 15 years ago and i don’t
really remember how it is.)
the whole movie is about deception, and make
believe. i guess that’s
what the real world is about: lies, and more lies to cover them up. you’ll notice how life is
unfair. pretentious people
get away with what they want, just because they give others a
good impression by the way they “act”, literally.
it somehow scares me when i see the hinted similarity
between glass and me, the way he remembers how each and every
person likes their way of things, and how he tries to please them
by showing them he remembers. people just like it when you
take heart in learning their likes and dislikes. it makes them feel special. but the difference with me is
that i do not remember to please. i just remember. and try to make things less
complicated by doing so. i
hate complication and unresolved issues, and will use me “strength”,
my good memory that is, to avoid them at all costs. but sometimes this just makes things more unresolvable. i’m such a conflicted person. 茅盾, 茅盾…
the interesting
thing is, the movie ends with facts about the real life stephen
glass and “the new republic”, stating that glass got
his name out and has his own autobiography published. it’s just like frank
abagnale from <<catch me if you can>>. both were extremely talented,
yet they didn’t use such intelligence in something
productive. doesn’t
it sound ironic to you? a
person who’s broke the law as frank did, or violated
professional ethics as glass, (both loosing everyone’s
trust by the way), still got to be recognized and published their
own book. strange world it
is that we’re in.
anyhow, the movie
is quite good overall, partly because of its short length, no
unnecessary bits and pieces, and its understandability. (bb said she hasn’t looked
at the caption throughout the movie and still understand the
whole thing.)
