Troy

i don’t remember when i saw this trailer, and i don’t remember who’s in it except brad pitt, but i just knew i have to see this. i didn’t know it was so much related to greek mythology, which i absolutely love. and for those who didn’t know anything about the legendary archilles, and the greek gods, temples and rituals, the movie will be alot less interesting. too bad i don’t have my “encyclopedia of mythology” with me (a book which i can’t live without.), i can’t spell their names properly and i can’t verify the movie’s accuracy. i’ll try my best to recall the stories about these mythical characters.

i always like the myth of archilles. i never remember which war he fought in, (and surely i didn’t know brad pitt was playing archilles at the time i wanted to see the movie either.), but he’s the best mortal warrior in greek mythology. his mother, thetis, somehow angered the gods, had him bath in the river of dead when he was an infant after being warned that he’s to be killed. she held archilles by the heel when she bathed him in the river of immortality. and that was the only point on his body that’s susceptible to damage, hence the term “archilles’ heel”. i knew he was gonna be killed by paris’ arrow, so i guess knowing the story that well isn’t all good afterall.

to be accurate, archilles is gay and has a love affair with his cousin, patroclus.  suddenly realized i have a tendency of liking gay guys!!!.  i realized that when i was singing k with bb and my fav male singers, namely 林一峰 and 黃耀明, are both gay.  and now comes archilles…damn it.  anyways, patroclus should be very handsome in a girlish way, which is one of the 敗筆 in the movie since the one playing him is neither handsome nor beautiful.

come to think of it, i guess archilles’ love for briseis make him a bi-sexual then. it’s interesting that back in the times of the greeks, there’re already so much “modern” and radical ideas presented. the gods all have human qualities, and the love affairs and emotions between mortal and immortal, between immortals, and between mortals, are all complicated and “real”. guess that’s what i like about greek mythology.

to me, the most appealing character must be hector, the trojan prince. “honor your god. love your woman. defend your country.” straightforward, simple and sincere. he’s not as handsome and romantic as the young paris, and he’s not as fierce and invincible as the legendary archilles. he’s just an ordinary man, who love his family, his people, his country. he’s a brave and noble leader, not a warrior, who’s just not blessed with luck.

the phrase he said to his beloved young brother, reminds me that love is not only between that between lovers, but also for your family, your friends, your country. there’s other kind of love that should be cherished. there’s more important things in my life.

in greek mythology, paris is the most beautiful mortal. and although i don’t consider orlando bloom handsome, his representation of a conflicting character --- a helpless romantic who neglected helen after his shameful defeat; a proud prince who acted cowardly during battles --- is quite convincing. and there’s him arching like legolas again, with his infamous arrow that killed the legendary archilles. together with boromir, who played the final conqueror odysseus, it’s like a greece version of LOTR. and don’t the war scenes when the greeks attack the trojan war seem familiar??it must be using the same special computer effects as those of LOTR2, where the orcs attack mortor (?).

people must have thought <<troy>> must be about the tales of helen of troy and the trojan horse. although the movie is not unrelated to these two events --- in fact, it began and end with them --- the movie has alot more to do with the heroes and the aspects, be it honour, love, or fame, that they value in their life.

so to conclude, i present the set of posters that highlight these value. enjoy~
