The Channel Islands are an island chain lying just off California's southern coast. Kidport: The Food Chain
All living things depend on each other to live. The food chain shows how some animals eat other animals to survive. While being food for animals higher in the food chain, these animals may eat other animals or plants to survive. The food chain is a complex balance of life. If one animals source of food disappears, such as from over fishing or hunting, many other animals in the food chain are impacted and may die. This link looks at two examples of food chains, one in the water and the other on land.

Mote Marine Laboratory
The Mote Marine Laboratory is an independent, nonprofit research organization dedicated to excellence in marine and environmental sciences. Since its inception in 1955, the laboratory's primary missions have been the pursuit of excellence in scientific research and the dissemination of information to the scientific community as well as to the general public. Much of the laboratory's efforts are directed toward the Southwest Florida coastal region. NASA SeaWiFS Project
The purpose of the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) Project is to provide quantitative data on global ocean bio-optical properties to the Earth science community. Subtle changes in ocean color signify various types and quantities of marine phytoplankton (microscopic marine plants), the knowledge of which has both scientific and practical applications. The SeaWiFS Project will develop and operate a research data system that will process, calibrate, validate, archive and distribute data received from an Earth-orbiting ocean color sensor. San Pedro Marine Mammal Center
This hospital for the sick and injured seals and sea lions provides public viewing of their rehabilitation. There are frequently as many as 40-50 animals being cared for at a given time.
