THE TV HITS INTERVIEW

Ever wondered how Savage Garden came about? Well, here's the story. Darren answered an ad to join Daniel and his brother's band the two hit it off immediately and soon left to form Savage Garden!

They spent the first eight months in a one room flat in Sydney's sleazy King's Cross. "We've only ever had three arguments in the five years we've been together," says Darren, "and they were all during that time and about ridiculous things like the washing up"'

The guys have already fallen in love with England. "It's really important to us to do well here," explains Darren. "It's very hard and you've only got one shot at it, but we're going to give it our best!"

Daniel hasn't been back since he was ten, but he feels right at home here. "It's the only other country in the world I could imagine living in," he says. "It really feels like home." The guys are as different from each other as you can get. Daniel's laid back and chilled, a thinker, while Darren is a typical front man, wild, in yet face and a non-stop entertainer. A bizarre mixture but the perfect concoction!

Although Savage Garden sounds like a heavy metal band, it's actually meant to be quite romantic. "It's inspired by Anne Rice novels like Interview with the Vampire," explains Darren, "although actually we both hate the word garden!"

Daniel is bonkers about Kyle Minogue!

They've both got steady girlfriends who work with children. Spooky! If they had to have a third band member, they'd pick Seal. They've got a bit of a mutual admiration society going. "We Just think so highly of each other," says Darren, "but because were together all day at work, we tend to go our separate ways at night!"

Darren's nickname is 'Doze'. "When I was a baby I was really chubby and they said I looked like a bulldozer, then it was shortened to 'Dozer', then 'Doze'." Daniel was actually quite surprised to hear this - he thought it was because he was always asleep! You learn something new every day! Darren simply calls Daniel 'Jonesy'. "It takes me back to the schoolyard," laughs Dan.

They're both clever sausages. Daniel studied to be an offset printer, while Darren started studying to be a journalist In 20 years' time, Daniel wants people to say about Savage Garden, "They went through this horrid wicked business and still came out the same nice people they went in as and gee, they're filthy rich now'." Darren, on the other hand, wants them to say, "I never met him, but I bet he'd be an asshole!" Cheers, then.
